The 96-hour LC50 was greater than 4000 mg/L because only 5 percent mortality occurred in each of the 2700 and 400C mg/L concentrations, the highest concentrations tested. Two identical vessels, both co'it.dining only laboratory well water, were designated as t-heHnO controls. Chemical stability of the test and control materials in well water was not determined. Juvenile, unsexed fathead minnows (Pimephal es promel as) from Hasken-bred stock with a 1.9 cm mean standard length (range 1.2 to 2.5 cm) and 0.079 g mean wet weight (range 0.020 to 0.194 g) were randomly placed in the test vessels, 10 fish per test vessel, two test vessels per concentration. Loading was 0.20 g fish/L. Fathead minnows are identified by labeling the culture and test vessels. The fish were maintained at Haskell Laboratory for approximately 47-53 days, with the last 21 days in a 272-liter Fiberglas tank (84-cm in diameter by about 49-cm liquid depth) before being used for this test. Holding temperature was within 5C of testing temperature throughout the holding period. The dissolved oxygen concentration during acclimatization was assumed to be at or near saturation because air was continuously bubbled through the water. No treatment of the fish for diseases was required during the holding period. Fish were not fed for approximately 48 hours prior to nor during the exposure. The test solutions were not aerated, and temperature was maintained between 21.8C and 22.2C. Photoperiod was maintained at 16 hours 1ight:8 hours dark. Mortality counts and observations were made approximately every 24 hours during the 96-hour exposure period. Dissolved oxygen and pH were measured in the H0 control and in the low, medium, and high test concentrations at the beginning of the test and at approximately 24-hour Intervals during the 96-hour exposure period. Total alkalinity, hardness (EDTA). and conductivity were measured at the beginning of the test in the H,0 control.
