Pive grams of the expanded vermiculite and 20 grams of the unexpanded vermiculite were dried in an oven at 120C for two hours and ground to 170 mesh using a mortar and pestel. Polarised light microscopy with dispersion staining was ued to examine the ground material for asbestos minerals-. ' Tremolite-actinolite was detected in both the expanded and * unexpanded vermiculite. The unexpanded vermiculite contains * 0-1-0-5? by weight tretoolite-actinclite while the expanded material "f contains <0-1-0.1% of this mineral. In both of the samples the ; tremolite-actinolite appears to be of the massive variety, however, ' the mineral is easily broken in fragments with high aspect ratios. - Under current government regulations these fragments are considered - to be asbestifer.
