ISEA Counsel ISEA Executive Director Chairman Houston presided and called the meeting to order at 10:30 a.m. On motion by Mr. Casey, seconded by Mr. Sager and carried, the minutes of the January 139 1977 meeting were approved as previously distributed. Chairman Houston called on Mr. Dickson for a report on the activities of the Chemical Standards Committee for Safety Wearing Apparel. Mr. Dickson, in turn, called on Mr. Sisson, who has served as Chairman of the Task Force for this project. Mr. Sisson reported that the Task Force has been successful 'in getting ASTM to organize and sponsor a standards-writing Committee on Pro tective Clothing for Chemical Workers. Mr. Sisson and the Association's Executive Director have met with ASTM officials on several occasions during 1977} and this project was formally launched at an organizational meeting of the new ASTM F-23 Committee on October 4 and 53 1977. It was reported at that meeting that Mr. Gerald Hess, Goodyear Aerospace Corporation, was elected Chairman of the F-23 Committee, with Mr. Sisson being named Vice Chairman, DKS 264 2- - Richard L. Callendine, Dow Chemical Company, Membership Secretary, and William Gallagher, Defense Personnel Support Center, Recording Secretary. Mr. Sisson also indicated that Mr. Ladick would be serving as Chairman of a Task Force to develop'definitions for the proposed new standard. It was also revealed' that the next meeting of the F-23 Committee will be held on January 18 and 19, 1978, in Philadelphia. Following that meeting, the next session will be held in June in Boston. Chairman Houston indicated that members of the Safety Wearing Apparel Group would be kept up-to-date on the activities of the F-23 Committee, and he urged all members of the group who are involved with clothing for chemical workers to become active on this committee. ChairmsCh .Houston called on Mr. Wheeler to comment on various efforts which have been undertaken by other organizations to develop safety clothing stan dards. Mr. Wheeler stated that little or no progress has been made by or ganizations such as Bendix, Arthur D. Little, etc. Mr. Thomas commented that the states of California and Texas are currently working on standards that would have an impact on safety wearing apparel. Chairman Houston reported on a meeting organized by RIOSH last July to dis cuss personal safety equipment for the Fire Service. He indicated he at tended this meeting, which was also attended by the Chairmen of the Head Protection and Respiratory Protection Groups of ISEA. A report on this meeting was sent earlier this year to all members of the Safety Wearing Apparel Group. Mr. Sager reported on the status of the pending OSHA standard concerning exposure to asbestos. He indicated that no hearings on this subject have, as yet, been scheduled, but this will undoubtedly occur in 1978. Mr. Casey was called upon for a report on foreign competition, and stated that the importation of work gloves is at an all-time high. Related to this, he indicated the Work Glove Manufacturers Association has been ag gressively petitioning the International Trade Commission in an effort to bring some relief to. this part of the industry. Membership Chairman Barry Shepard introduced the new members who were in at tendance at today's meeting, and reported that he planned to issue a new letter of solicitation to those companies who are currently not members of SWAG. Mr. Thomas suggested Pioneer Rubber and Surety Rubber as potential new members. Chairman Houston reported that he has appointed an Aluminum Subcommittee that will, meet on December 15th at the ISEA Offices with representatives from the Aluminum Association, to discuss safety clothing requirements for workers ex posed to molten aluminum. Related to this new activity, Mr. Thomas suggested the possibility that the Safety Wearing Apparel Group could work with other industry associations in discussing safety clothing needs. Mr. Sager, who^ was instrumental in opening liaison with the Aluminum Association, said he felt the Safety Wearing Apparel Group could become a problem-solving organi zation for specific industry problems, such as those currently facing the aluminum industry.
