Deitchmari Bronx, New York Case 48106-3 48087-1 Memorandum for Record Flaking ceiling insulation is a concern of New York Tele phone employees working at Yankee Stadium, Bronx, New York as to potential asbestos exposure. The entire clubhouse ceiling of the stadium was sprayed with insulating material where New York Telephone employees have a storeroom, monitor the television - telephone interface, install and service telephones, and may run pa$-le for additional telephone capa city. The Bell System Services Group at Bell Laboratories was requested to perform an industrial hygiene evaluation by Dr. C. Steinmetz of New York Telephone. Summary General environmental sampling and bulk sample collection was performed at Yankee Stadium, Bronx, New York on October 17, 1977 to evaluate New York Telephone Employee exposure to asbestos. The results indicate asbestos is present in spray insulation on the ceiling of the clubhouse area, however, at the present time airborne levels are low. The material appears to be flak ing and could represent a problem in airborne exposure in the future. Recommendations The recommendations are: (1) New York Telephone Employees working in Yankee Stadium should be informed of the results of this investigation. (2) The management of Yankee Stadium should be informed of their potential problem of flaking ceiling insulation in the club house area. CONFIDENTIAL 00382? SWB-ltf 2 (3) Special precautions should be undertaken to reduce New York Telephone Employee asbes tos exposure if installation or repair work involves disturbances of the ceiling insul ation. Procedures described in the OSHA Safety and Health Standards (29 CFR 1910.1001Asbestos) should be followed. Procedure Asbestos samples were collected using the procedures outlined by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The procedure involves collection of the fibers on a small filter cassette with later analysis using phase contrast microscopy. The microscopic analysis was performed by the Bell Laboratories Environmental Health and Safety Department. Air was pulled through the filters using battery powered sampling pumps manufactured by MSA at 2.0 /min. The pumps were calibrated using the soao bubble flowmeter technique. Bulk samples were taken by-lremoving a small section of the spray insulation and placing it into a sealed envelope. This procedure was completed after environmental sampling so the disturbance of the ceiling insulation would not contaminate the general air sampling. The material was shipped to ES Laboratories, Marlton, New Jersey for analysis. Results The results of bulk sample analysis by ES Laboratories are shown in Table I. The results indicate' variable composition of chrysotile (asbestos). This is considered typical in spray insulation as original raw material input may vary especially where chrysotile is not the major constituent.
