February 22, 1975 Asbestos Free Insulation
To provide insulating materials which are asbestos free we propose the following actions;
M.R.O, Stores - The 17 Asbestos items numbered S0-1S2-050 through 570 be checked individually as to replaceabillty with asbestos-free products. Some will no doubt be quite safe to use as is but each should be documented as to its status.
The S Insulation Felts, numbered 50-260-030 thru 50-2S0-100 should be identified as to asbestos content, if any.
The two Pipe Covering items are apparently asbestos insulating cements:

50-420-060 Eagle No. 66 50-420-070 Johns-Manvilie No. 575
These and other vendors should be contacted for asbestos-free substitutions.
Review all items in Stores such as Thermon, Ultralite, Zeston, Fire Clay, etc.
Construction Specifications - Review and revise to provide asbestos-free counterparts
for existing asbestos containing materials. UCC may have a group working on such
replacement materials.

1. In this section are included all removals of insulation from pipe and vessels or of pipe and vessels covered with insulations.
2. Consider all insulations to be asbestos-containing unless readily identifiable as glass fiber, foam glass, mineral wool or the like. Elbows and fittings of small size will in most cases be covered with asbestos cement. Smooth cement coatings over other insulations will probably contain asbestos.

3. When removing asbestos-containing insulation materials work, as to minimize dusting. Wear an approved respirator. Wear coveralls. Post area against trespassers. Dampen dry and dusty materials using fine water spray - avoid strong jets which can raise dust.
?t-4. Place all asbestos-containin? insulations into scran drums for which lids are

1. Major new installations should be logged as asbestos-free with any exceptions noted.
2. Some means of marking asbestos-free replacements or minor installations should be decided upon. The burden of this may exceed that incurred by the asbestos precautions whenever in doubt.
3. Appoint a maintenance engineer as Thermal Insulation specialist to generate the expertise needed for maintenance operations, replacement material quality, application of standards, etc.
4. Work with Engineering Standards group to obtain and implement use of new
materials.
