No 263 - 1949 March 31 MC NAIR TO DIRECT VHITE LEAD SALES J. G. C. McNair has been named to direct sales of -white lead for the Company. He continues to supervise sales of linseed oil. Mr. McNair began his National Lead career in 1910. After three years as a salesman for paint materials and metals in the south, he was transferred to the Atlantic Branch office in Nev'York. In 1917 he was named assistant to the white lead sales manager, becoming sales manager of the branch in 1926, assistant branch manager in 1923 ana manager in 1939. His appointment as director of linseed oil sales for the Company became effec tive January 1 of this year. ~ HURLEY TO RETIRE; TERWILLIGER AND ZANG PROMOTED Villiam F. Hurley, manager of the pigment division of the Atlantic Branch, will retire on April 15 because of ill health. He is succeeded by V, A. Terwilliger, formerly linseed oil sales manager of the branch. J. A. Zang becomes assistant man ager -of the pigment division. Mr.'Hurley began his Company career in 1911 as a junior accountant with the Matheson Lead Company. He became office manager and later assistant manager of the company. He joined the Atlantic Branch staff in 1927, becoming sales promotion man ager, then sales manager of painters' products in May 1942. In October of the same year he was named assistant manager of the branch and in January 1949 manager of the pigment division. Mr. Terwilliger came to National Lead in 1919 as a sales representative in New ' York state. He was transferred to the Atlantic Branch sales staff in Nev York City in 1939. On February 1, 1941 he became assistant sales manager of the branch lin seed oil department and on April 1, 1942 was appointed sales manager. Mr. Zang started his Company career in 1905 as an office boy. He served as a billing clerk, bookkeeper, cashier and metal department assistant in the Atlantic Branch, was then appointed assistant to the comptroller and manager of the branch's export department. In 1922 he was transferred to the sales department and in 1939 became sales manager of the white lead division of the branch. BAROID SALES DIVISION APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED Three executive appointments in the Baroid Sales Division have been announced,. V. L. Heater is the new general sales manager of the division, retaining his - ' "**: title as assistant to the general manager. He went to work for Baroid in 1934* and held the position of Baroid* 8 Pacific Coast Division manager until November 1, 1946, when he was appointed assistant to the general manager. Edward J. Hagstette, Jr., formerly an assistant to Mr. Heater, has been appointed manager of the products procurement department, having charge of the purchase of rav and finished materials for resale. He began his Baroid career as a field engineer in the Gulf Coast Division. In September 1947 he was transferred to Los Angeles to become an assistant to Mr. Heater. Arthur Langton, newly-appointed manager of the advertising department, began his Company career in 1935 as a technical editor with the Baroid Sales Division, and has been associated with the advertising department ever since. Gerst has been appointed general superintendent of the Hoyt and Steel Package plants of the St. Louis Branch, effective March 16. Mr. Gerst was employed as an assistant engineer at the Steel Package Plant in 1944 and wns elevated to assistant superintendent the following year. On January 1, 1946, he was made superintendent of that plant, holding that position until his present appointment. j NEW KIRK PLANT DEDICATED iI The new Portland, Oregon plant of Morris P. Kirk & Son, Inc., was dedicated for mally on March 19. Industrialists and community leaders inspected the smelter and refinery, which vent into production on March 21. Plant manager in charge of operations is J. K. P. Miller, with regional sales and distribution under the direction of Delm&r C. Wise. BANES NAMED COMPTROLLER OF ST. LOUIS S & R DIVISION Robert L. Banes has been appointed comptroller of the St. Louis Smelting and Refining Division. He has been employed since August 27, 1923, starting as a miner, becoming successively a clerk, cashier, purchasing agent and chief accountant of the Company's Tri-State operations, holding the latter title until his present appointment. WALTER J. BROWN OF LABORATORIES DIES t Walter J. Brown, who was in charge of the analytical department of the Company research laboratories in Brooklyn for twenty years, died on March 13. He had re tired on January 1 of this year. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. May Brown; a daughter, Mrs. Alice Miller, and a sister, Mrs. Lillian Parker. SIMONSEN PROMOTED AT PERTH AMBOY L. R. Simonsen has been appointed assistant superintendent of the ready-mixed paint plant at Perth Amboy. He has been acting assistant superintendent since 0ctc ber 15, 1948. 1 Mr. Simonsen began his National Lead career as a millwright in the Britannia department in 1937, becoming supervisor of the lead-coating pilot plant in 1946 am assistant to the superintendent of the paint plant in April 1947.
