Extensive testing for PVC dust exposure was done with all results being well within the OSHA standard for respirable particulates. PVC production was controlled at 23.4 MM pounds for inventory purposes. Orders increased during the month as a result of marketing efforts and improvements in the economy. Particle size control improved with the installation of three more sets of higher horsepower agitator blades in the new reactors. Resin bagging was resumed to meet year end inventory goals and debagging of marginal quality product was done during reduced production periods. VCM efficiency was 1.032 pounds per pound of PVC versus a 1.0196 standard. Year to date efficiency is 1.01876. Compound sales increased and inventories decreased with production of 4.17 MM pounds. Quality performance continues to be below standard at 3%, primarily a result of unbudgeted mill scrap from Line I. Dry Blend produced 1.65 MM pounds, operating on a 2 shift, 5 day week. Plasticizer produced 1.03 MM pounds to meet internal demand and to improve inventories. Concrete work for the PVC expansion is proceeding satisfactorily. The corporate water treating trailer was put into service at the plant to evaluate the application of a bio disc system between bio ponds 3 and 4. Preliminary results are encouraging. An L&N Microtrac particle size analyzer was put into service in the laboratory to improve the speed of all particle size analyses and to eliminate the drying step in PVC slurry particle size determinations. Results appear to correlate well with sieve analyzers and final correlations are being made for routine usage. Total plant variable cost variance was $301.6 M with $332.5 M due to price and VCM transfer price contributing $320.2 M of the price variance. Efficiency variance was $12.1 M por September. (/ ./ C.
