To August 1973 the attaoted latter waa directed to General Services Garage areas informing than of procedures in ninimiaing airborne asteetoa in vehlol* brake rebuilding and inspeotion operatione. i study concerning asbestos expoaure of garage aeobanios during brake lining maintensnos, conducted bjr Mt. Sinai School of Nsdialna in 1975* concluded that airborne fiber concentration frequently exceeded the current raguleted Unite. It van found that aebeatoe fibers blown into the ataoephare by air blasts used to elaan brake parte was tha major contributor, and that areaa raaote free tbs actual cleanii* contained unacceptable aateetoa levels. These findings convinced BIOSH (Rational Insti tute for Occupational Safety and health) to reoently award a tl80,060 ooutraet to Kt. Sinai to datemine the bea.th haxarde associated with exposure to asbeatoa in these operations. Concurrently a $64,$22 contrict was let to Texas l&K Raeearoh Foundation to determine and docunant the collection efficiency of Industrial vacuum units and teohniquee for disposal of asbestos waste in brake and clutch servicing industries.
In view of tha previous results and the ongoing studies, and previous Ford action in this area (see Maintenance Bulletin 137 attached) garage areaa within Car bgineering are reminded that the exposure of enployeaa to airborne asbestos should be United by restricting the use or location of air blast cleaning of brake parts or assemblies. In addition, all garags areas are to plan for eonplate elimination of this preotloe and replacement by vacuum or other methods to eliminate airborne asbestos h&sards. Future developments relating to tha study will be transmitted upon reoeipt to all affeoted operations.
