ProjectIToR Summary Sheet Project Name: Shanghai Health Study Project Lead: Patsy Clegg/Stuart Cagen Date: October 3, 2002 Purpose: Manage and coordinate Shell Chemicals' input to a major study in Shanghai, China designed to evaluate possible associations of benzene exposure to leukemias or lymphomas. Study management includes active cost tracking and management as well as communication of study plans and outcomes internally and externally. External communication includes scientific and regulatory communities in China. Case for Action: (What is the issuelbarrier being addressed.) Benzene is a major product of Shell Chemicals' Aromatics PBU and is also a chemical of interest to all Oil Products and other RD operations globally. The Shanghai Health Study represents an opportunity to expand knowledge of benzene toxicity at a time when major uncertainties exist in the scientific literature regarding possible diseases associated with benzene exposure to humans as well as the amount of benzene needed to be associated with these diseases (ie., dose response). Size of the Prize: (Order of Magnitude) Scientifically sound understanding of benzene related diseases in human. This will support product stewardship aspirations and advocacy for scientifically credible assessment of risks. In the regulatory community, risk assessments based on uncertainty can lead to regulated occupational or community exposure levels that are unrealistic with respect to health risks. Scientifically based values are more realistic and lead to credible risk values. This has impact to our manufacturing locations as well as fuel formulations for Oil Products and RD globally.
