The con tration of zinc in the air is noted as well below maximum allowable concentration, but the lead is high during the dumping period. The actual dumping period should be not over 3 hours of shaking and blowing out the cars during each 8 hour shift. A switch has been installed on the upper platform to uennit shutting down the shake out and thus running at shorter intervals of time. Operators are required to wear goggles or shield and respirators. Because of the high noise level some men have worn gauze ear Plugs and are encouraged to trv ear dugs furnished by the Safety Department. An adequate dust collecting; system would cost approximately $15,000 to $20,000. 2. Location: Tripper Floor. The south and of the trioper floor has the highest dust concentration due to the dust handling erniiument and the dust furnaces in this area. The dust elevator is worn out and is to be replaced with a new chain in the near future at which time the discharge housing will be totally enclosed. Men working on the tripper floors on the cooper and zinc sides are provided with dust and gas respi rators which they are to wear when on the .lob, Oas on the triooer floor is due primarily to improper adjustment of stack dampers on the cooper side and rfhenever this occurrs it is soon corrected. 3. Location: Dust Bin on the Charge Floor. . To clear the atmosphere in this area a separate dust collecting s?/stem v/odd be reouired. Respirators are used by the operators. June 27, 1958 4. Location: Screening Plant on East Side of Puilding. A twin Puell Cyclone has been installed and has improved the dust condition and the dust recoverv. Calcine loaders are reouired to wear respirators. ZITJC LTAC^NC- PLAIT1 1. Location: Calcine Dumoing Shed. No satisfactory dust collecting or dust prevention system has been tried. The shed is large coverinf? 2 tracks and is ouen at the ends. Except when cleaning out cars the dumoer can get on the v/ind?/ard side and escaoe the dust. The dumpers are to use respirators-and eosrles. Cross members in the walls of this shed carry a full load of caked and fine calcine vihich contributes to dusting. The real solution in prevention of dust loses and air contamination in tramming and dimming cars, is a conveyor system. 2. Location: Drag Chain and :.7et Screen. The dust atmosphere of this area is recognized and when operations warrant a hood of stainless steel will be installed over the screens and discharge of the drag chain. A door will be changed and 2 doors hung to prevent wind blown dust in the atmosphere. 3. Location: Neutral and Acid Leach. Tests showed only a trace of arsine in this area, A conical shaped hood has been in use for over a year on one of the acid oachucas. It does a much better iob of eliminating the steam than do the flat ton covers. Such hoods would give added assurance of a complete elimination of arsine at all times and would greatly improve working condition in winter months. 4. Location: Purification Collecting Tank. Tests showed arsine to be slightly above the maximum allowable con centration. This condition could be corrected with a conical hood, open on the launder side, vented with a stack through the roof. This Job should cost ap proximately $1,000. electrolyzing Location: Lead Pots and Casting Wheel. A fan was purchased for ventilating this area.
