ACTIVATED SLUDGE RESPIRATION INHIBITION TEST
TEST SUBSTANCE
Identity:A mixturecontainingper-fluorooctanesulfonamtaey; alsobe referredtoas PFOS, FC-95, or as a component ofFC-206CF or FC-206CF-X. (1-Octanesulfoniacid)(CAS # 2795-39-3).
Remarks: The 3M productionlotnumber was 501. The testsample isFC206CF-X. Currentinformationindicatesitisa mixtureof0.5% PFOS, 10% diethyleneglycolmonobutyl ether,78.08% water,1.375% acrylifcoamr, 1.5% sodium octylsulfate,1% suffonatedalkylethersalts,6.0% urea,0.5% triethanolaminea,nd 0.05% tolyltriazole.
The followingsummafy applies to a mixture with incompletely characterizedconcentrations of impuiltie-sD.ata may not accurately reflectthe toxicityof the fluorochemical component of the testsample.
METHOD
Method: OECD Guideline209 GLP: No Year Completed: 1992 Analyticalmonitoring: Dissolvedoxygen concentrationsp,H, and temperature. Statisticamlethods: Resultswere determined by calculatioonf the % inhibitioinn respiratiornate. Test organism source: Activatedsludge mixed liquorcollectedfrom the Metro Wastewater Treatment Plant,St.Paul,MN. Test condition:
Dilutionwater: MilliporMeilli_QTwMater. Synthetic sewage: per OECD method. Reference and testsolution preparation: A stock solutionofthe referencesubstance,3,5-dichlorophenowla,s prepared by dissolving 500 mg in 10 mL 1N NAOH, dilutedto30 mL withMilliporMeilli_QTM water, then brought tothe pointof incipienptrecipitatiownith 1N H2SO4 and dilutedto 1 L withMilli_QTwMater. The pH ofthe reference solutionwas measured to be 7.6. Test substance was added directly tothe testvessels.InitiaplH 6.8. Test vessels: Not given. Number of concentrations: one (duplicatep)lus 1 reference substance and 2 blankcontrols Temperature: 18.6- 21.6 'C Total suspended solids and pH on day of testing:2.6 g/L (TSS in final1:.04g/L),initiaplH 6.9 and finalpH 7.9. Element Basis: Respiraboninhibitioans determinedby oxygen consumption.
Remarks: Valueswere correctetdo20 OC forcalculations.
RESULTS
Nominal concentrations: 2 Blank controlsr,eferencesubstance and 1000 mg/L
Element values: 30-minute EC50 = >1000 rng/L 3-hour EC50 = >1000 mg/L
Element values based on nominal concentrations.
Remarks: Testingwas conducted on the mixtureas describedinthe Test Substance Remarks field. The values reportedapplyto thatmixtureand not the fluorochemicalproportionalone.
CONCLUSIONS
The testsubstance 3-hour EC50 foractivatedsludge respiratioinnhibitiownas determinedtobe >1000 mg/L. The 1000 mg/L treatmentcaused -18% respiratioinnhibitioant3 hours.

DATA QUALITY
ReliabilitKyJ:imischranking2. The study meets allcriterifaorqualitytesting. However, the sample puritywas not properlycharacterizedand the study lacksanalyticaclonfirmationofthe amount offluorochemicalproportioninthe solution.
