Subj ect: PRELIMINARY CLASSIFICATION OF. SUSPECTED CARCINOGENS
Additional information on this subject has come to our attention which I feel should be passed on to you to supplement ny letter of July 18, 1978.
First, it appears that chemical substances in coal tar and/or coal tar pitch were given more attention by Clement Associates than we realized, although this was not immediately apparent because only two of their num erous complex constituents were included on the Safety and Health Cormittee's list which we used for screening purposes. What to do about these substances becomes a very difficult problem which will take more time to study before we can offer any definitive advise. For planning purposes in the interim, how ever, my personal opinion is that'users of coal tar and coal tar pitch should assume a very strong probability that Category I regulations will be appli cable to their use in the future.
Please refer to the attached table which compares current suggested classi fications for a group of chemical substances commonly associated with coal tar/coal tar pitch, and clearly indicates both the range of opinion concern ing carcinogenicity as well as the lack of agreement existing at the present
time (N/C indicates not classified).
Second, we received a copy of a preliminary suggested list of substances classified as Category I (only) compiled by NIOSH. There are both similarities and substantial differences between some of NIOSH's classifications of chemi cals we use and Clement Associates' (CA's) lists, summarized as follows:
1. NIOSH agreed with CA's Category I classification on:

2. NIOSH disagreed with CA's Category I classification on:
