AN OVERVIEW OF THE AVON LAKE GENERAL CHEMICAL PLANT RESPIRATOR PROGRAM A respiratory protection program has been established at ALGC plant that meets the requirements of Section (g), Respiratory Protection. Air purifying, air supplied and self-contained respirators have been selected as required in Section (g) paragraph (2). The ALGC respirator program as established and maintained meets the requirements of section (g) paragraph (3) which requires that programs meet the requirements of 1910.13^* Respirators that are used in the Avon Lake Plant have been selected as provided for in (g) (4) or in the interpretation attached. Respirator equipment is utilized as indicated below. Unknown or above 1,000 ppm Self contained breathing apparatus with full face piece operating on the pressure demand mode. Not over 1,000 ppm Type C, supplied air continuous flow half face piece respirator. Not over 10 ppm A half face piece cannister respirator with cannister approved for Vinyl Chloride. Employees have been trained in the use of these respirators and acquainted with the provisions of (g) (5) (l) (ii) in the training sessions conducted in compli ance with Section (J) of this Standard. Those employees choosing to wear air purifying cannisters are instructed to replace cannisters ".... prior to the expiration of their service life or the end of the shift...". Continuous multipoint monitoring and alarm systems have been installed in all Regulated Areas to alert employees of concentrations that might exceed the allowable concentrations for the devices in use. Also, this system is utilized to give immediate notice of exposures in excess of 25 ppm to employees choosing to exercise their option under (g) (l) until April 1, 1976. Employees exercising this option are reviewed regarding the hazards of Vinyl Chloride etc. quarterly as indicated in the attached guide for Quarterly Review. All employees assigned to work in Regulated Areas have been fitted with and issued a pe rsonal half face piece continuous flow respirator. Employees are required to have this respirator on their person at all times while in the work areas. Attached is Safety Procedure 45 which covers the ALGC respirator program in its major aspects. Nov that there is an adequate supply of masks, these steps must be taken. 1. All persons assigned to Regulated Areas must be issued a airline mask and have it on their person while in the Regulated Area. 2. All persons not assigned to Regulated Areas, but who's work requires them to stay in Regulated Areas, must be issued a airline mask and have it on their __ person while in the Regulated Area. 3. All persons issued sirline masks must either have the mask on their person or stored properly in a plastic bag, clean snd ready for use. 4. All airline -masks must be identified with the owners name or locker number, and returned to the locker room monthly for inspection and cleaning. It is suggested that a temporary storage location be designated in each work area where masks maybe left while persons are on break or for other short absences from the work area. This area should be labled and be out of the work area in a stair well ect. Questions regarding the respirator program should be directed to the Safety Department. L. S.
