Save Space, Weight, and Money
Specify Joy Adjustable Blade Fans
Joy axial-flow fans offer you
substantial economies in
space, weight, and money.
Built around the motor, the
fan becomes an integral part
of the duct . . . requires no
foundations, complicated
duct offsets and elbows, or
drives. Simple blade adjust
ment provides a wide pres
sure range for any volume, or
change in volume, and per
mits on-the-job correction to
meet changed-conditions.
Fewer blades of the modestly
priced Series 800 Axitube give
unusually low noise levels
while maintaining high effi
ciencies. For even higher effi
ciency, Joy offers Series 900
rind 1000 Axivanes. Both have
the same performance char
acteristics, but Series 900 is
more economical. Two-stage,
-controllablepitch, belt-driven,
and custom modified units
also available. For more infor
mation write to Joy Manufac
turing Company, 900 Wood
land Avenue, Michigan City,
Indiana.

^*=s=' _ # Underground Thermal Conduits are "customerized," designed by the
;(JJ YCIC engineer to perform properly in the ground condition for each specific sB project--Value engineering in practice.
Significant Features
WATERTIGHTNESS--New tougher hoot resistant polyvinyl cbloride plastic sheeting using compatible sealont odtMtiyes Insure conduit integrity.
INSPECTION--Continuous internal vents and emergency diains remove any water ond signoi accidental breakage.
RESPONSIBILITY--Specialty subcontractors under license end surveitence using trademarked components to provide quality installations.
Componenfs/Characferrsfrcs
BASE PAD--3" minimum structural concrete. PASTING MEDIUM--special block-out material allows un restricted longitudinal pipe movement. INSULATING CONCRETE--water resistant mu. 25#/C.F. ODD, "k" factor 0.70, crushing strength 14,400ft/S.F.
WATERPROOFING--extemol cosing s 20 go. special pofy-
vinyl chloride continuous waterprao
, Internal
drains and vents remove accidental water and signal pipe
or cosing breaks.
STABILITY--lightweight aggregate-Portland cement con crete develops uniform strength unaffected by time or temperature.
WATER RESISTANCE--Internal emergency drains and vents will remove area water or signal pipe breok. Ad mixtures in the insulating concrete retard moisture absorp
tion .
SIMPLICITY--Pipes ore laid and tested on precast supports set to line ond grade, coated with corrosion inhibitor waterproof and high temperature resistance greose, ond embedded in the special "b-t-u'1 insulating concrete. Back fill ond energize the next day.
b-t-u
PARTING MEDIUM--Corrosion inhibilive grease or beatdestroyed blackout around pipe allows unrestricted longi tudinal pipe movement. INSULATING CONCRETE--high strength water resistant mix, 30#/C.F. ODO, "k" factor 0.60, crushing strength
28,800# /S.F. WATERPROOFING--integrally mixed "Z" crete brand waterproofing compounds and greater density resist in termittent water exposure, internal drains and vents re move accidental water or signal pipe breaks. A watershed or drape of plastic sheeting is recommended in areas of heavy surfoce irrigation. Note: 2* Base Pad may be in
stalled when ground conditions require.
INSULATING ENCASEMENT--New seaistructural air duct end pipe chase encasement provides positive protection, freedom from flotation and thermal insulation. RELIABILITY--Air-pteced lightweight concrete completely encloses air ducts or pipe chases to moke o monolithic structure. New techniques insure rapid placement with high early strength, allowing backfill the next day. FLEXIBILITY--Air-pteced lightweight concrete con be used to make smeU tunnels (chases) carrying piping in the usuol manner without rollers ond conventional insulation is not required. This concept ideal for moderate tempera ture hot water systems where temperature difference be tween pipes ts slight. General Cost is only o fraction of conventional methods. Piping is free to expand and con tract. Speciol access ond inspection pits may be pro vided os desired.

STRUCTURAL VALUE--Air-placed lightweight coocrete en casement meets or exceeds strength required of sewer tile. At 30#/C.F. density, crushing strength is 43,200#/S.F. minimum. The arch effect and backfill will tolerate any normal construction load.
INSULATION VALUE--This dual function material bos a "k" factor of 0.90 Blu/S.F./br./*F or 2 inch thickness is roughly equivalent to I inch of conventional insulation. Low heat capacity, approximately 1/12 that of structural rock concrete, insures rapid warm up and delivery of hot air at register.
WATER RESISTANCE--Integrally mixed additives resist temporary water exposure. Internal vents and drains or grovel ond tile undergrains leading to sumps should be installed where ground water is expected.
PERFORMANCE--Chided water and low temperature hot water insulation entering the second decode of service, improved by internal emergency drains and vents to re move possible condensation and signal pipe or cosing breaks.
VERSATILE Lightweight aggregate bound with high melt point asphalt will embed ony number or size of piping. Strength acquired by cooling.
EFFICIENT--Mk" factor for 16#/C.F. density material 0.45 6tv/S.F./br./*F, provides a MU" factor of 0.15 to 0.10 for a 3 or 4 inch thickness.

BASE PAD--3* minimum structural concrete. PARTING MEDIUM--speciol paper around pipe ollowt unrestricted togitudinal pipe movement. INSULATING ASPHALTIC CONCRETE--speciol formulation lightweight aggregate bound with asphall-16#/CJ. den sity, "k" factor 0.45, load carrying capacity 1,300#/5.F. minimum at 260*F. pipe temperature. WATERPROOFING--20 gouge speciol pofyvinyt chloride continuous external waterproof membrane . . . Internal drains ond vents. Note: Special undertlab applications free of water may allow elimination of waterproofing, base pod ond inter nal drains.
RAPID DRYOUT--Government engineers assume that all Heat transmission conduits will become wet, hence recov ery of design insulation value in a minimum time is re quired. Multiple vents ond drains for optimum water re moval plus formulated insulated concrete for rapid moist ure release fulfills Government criteria.
BASE PAD--3* minimum structural concrete.

PARTING MEDIUM BIOCK-OUT--special beat destroyed
wrapping serves as secondary vent allows unrestricted longitudinal pipe movement.
INSULATING CONCRETE--new lightweight formulation
20#/C.F~ oven dry density, "k" -- 0.55, crushing strength
I0,000#/S.f. minimum.
WATERPROOFING--External casing is 20 guage special
polyvinyl chloride continuous waterproof membrane . . .
Multiple internal drains ond vents remove occidental water
ond signal pipe or cosing breaks.
