Redle made a follow-up inspection of the chlorine cell room at Barberton on December 13, 1973. The deficiencies noted in the original inspection have been corrected or were in the process of being corrected. The walkway and alleys of circuits 3 and 4 were much improved. There is some more work required in the alleys of circuits 1 and 2, however, a program to improve the dralnag and tripping hazards are underway. An asbestos program has been started that meets all of the requirements of the Standard and then some. Your supervisory personnel should be commended on their handling of this situation. There is one condition that deserves further consideration. It was noted previously and again yesterday that those employees working with asbestos have asbestos fibers on their personal clothing. These employees periodically take their clothes home for laundering. Their wives do the washing of these garments. There are reported lung cases where wives whose sole exposure to asbestos was from the clothing of their husbands who worked with asbestos. It is recommended that employees who work with asbestos not take these home for laundering but these be cleaned by the company. If there is any doubt, I suggest that a mock test be performed where the used clothes of a worker be shaken in a confined space and an air sample collected to establish potential exposure.
