The laboratories are located on a 250 acre site adjacent to the Rev Jersey Turnpike and vlTLJhe devoted to research and development programs in the fields of pigments and coatings, non-ferrous metals and alloys, storage batteries, lead chemicals and allied products, organic and high polymer chemistry. Hughes, governor of Rev Jersey and Joseph A, Martino, president of Rational Lead Company, participated in today's ceremonies vhich were witnessed by. government, university and company officials, community leaders and representatives of other technical institutions. The new building, the first unit of a research complex to be built on this site, provides 87,000 square feet of floor spaoe on one level. Xt is composed of four laboratory wings connecting to a central core area of service laboratories, an administration ving and a cafeteria-library ving. gha main wings- and. cose area alone contain over one hundred individual laboratories and offices. N12718 0000-NLI-000024744 The basement of the building, in addition to the areas provided for maintenance and storage facilities, contains an unique 22,000 square foot series of tunnels which run under the laboratory areas and carry literally miles of service piping and electrical wiring. Due to this design, servicing and installation of mechanical equipment can be performed 2- in any room in the building with a minimum of effort and without interruption of research work in progress. Located to the rear of the laboratory building appurtenant facilities include a solvent storage building, well pumphouse and garage, and a sewage treatment plant. Next to the pumphouse a 150,000 gallon pedestal and sphere type water tower rises 125 feet into the air. The sphere of the tower is decorated with two 18 foot cameos of the familiar "Dutch Boy" trade mark which can be seen for miles in either direction by turnpike travellers. Rational Lead Company has been a pioneer in industrial research. It* Brooklyn Research Laboratories, the predecessor of the Hightstown facilities, were established in 1892 and were one of the first industrial laboratories estab lished in the country. Mr. Martino payed tribute to the important role of re search when he remarked: "The need for research and development arises from the conpetitive spirit inherent in the free enterprise system. New processes have had to be developed, new products discovered, to meet growing demands of an expanding economy. The only answer to the continuing problem of keeping pace with this rapid advance is found in research. We must explore new avenues of thought, seek new properties in materials, turn theory into practice." Operating plants and mines in 35 states and 15 foreign countries. National Lead Company maintains 15 other research and development facilities at various locations throughout the country. These laboratories concentrate on such products as titanium pigments, alloys and compounds; oil well drilling materials; die castings; bearings and high temperature refractories.
