Conrad SUBJECT Tank Car Repair Study September 13, 1973 As you know, we have been attempting to determine the practical hazards, if any, existing at the Tank Car Repair Shop as a result of painting and repairing taking place together. Early in the summer Henry Taylor took some atmospheric readings during painting. While he found no hazard, it was felt that the limited number of readings he had did not allow a firm decision. During late July and August, Rick Schmidt, using Mr. Taylor's equipment, took readings on twenty-two different days (copy attached). This particular period was selected since August is generally a month of minimum wind conditions. This information is being sent to Mr. Taylor who will add it to the other and make a report. The percentage figures obtained are % of the lower limit of flammable mixture not % of flammable mixture in the air. This means that the maximum recorded was approximately . 01 of the amount required to be flammable. Without attempting to predict an outcome, it appears that no practical hazard exists (assuming we have enough readings on which to base a reasonable decision ). Attachment R. E.
