INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE SURVEY
EXHIBIT
CHR-56
Summary
On June 17 and 22, 1982, the writer evaluated employee exposure to airborne asbestos fibers, total particulate, and solvent vapors in the Friction Products building. A single employee was shown to be exposed to an excessive level of airborne asbestos at the No. 178962 Besly finish grinder. Industrial Hygiene recommends that maintenance personnel cap the large branch exhaust duct located approximately 40 feet upstream of Besley grinder No. 178962.
Discussion
At the time of this survey the exhaust ventilation system servicing Besly grinder No. 178962 contained a large diameter open branch directly upstream from the finish grinding operation. A significant exhaust leak of this type increases the air volume and velocity downstream of the leak, but decreases the volume and velocity of the air upstream of the leak. In our opinion, the excessive exposure level observed at the finish grinding operation was a direct result of the uncapped branch duct. Industrial Hygiene will re-evaluate the affected work station after the exhaust system is repaired.
The OSHA asbestos standard requires that the Besly finish grinder be notified in writing of his exposure
within five days of the plant's receipt of this report. must also be timely notified of the corrective action being taken.
The need for caution when loading the asbestos dry mix into the Blpel presses has been well established by extensive environmental monitorings, our opinion, Bipel operator
di4not attempt to minimize the dispersion of airborne asbestos fitters while loading the No. 4 Bipel press at the time of this study.' A1thoughwas wearing a respirator approved for asbestos concentrations up to 20 fibers/cc, sloppy Bipel loading work habits cause a deterioration of the overall plant environment and may increase employee exposure levels at nearby work stations. Industrial Hygiene recor.mends that Bipel and hot press operators receive special training regarding the need to minimize the dis persion of airborne asbestos during Bipel loading.
