X. Armstrong Contracting and Supply Company ..
I talked to Tom Williams who was District Manager of the Philadelphia Contracting Unit. He recalls having sold to Armstrong Contracting and Supply during the late 1960*s on a sporadic bases. He doesn*t recall actual sales or pro ducts sold but Johns-Manville may have sold to Armstrong Contracting and Supply local branches in Philadelphia and Harrisburg. He said that Armstrong had a contract with Owens-Corning whereby they bought most of their products, or products that were not made by Armstrong Cork. Armstrong Contracting and Supply bought from Johns-Manville when Owens-. Corning did not have specific products.
Mr. Williams recalls having Armstrong Contracting and Supply*s regional manager visit the Johns-Manville unit in the 1960*s. Mr. Williams cannot state the specific nature of the business except that it must have been for sales purposes.
Armstrong Contracting and Supply Company, Lancaster, Pennsylvania was bought out by Armstrong Cork on January 1, 1958. It remained a subsidiary Of Armstrong Cork until August 1, 1969 "when it was sold.
Since our records before 1972 are all destroyed this information provided by Mr. Williams is as specific as we can get. There are possibly other people who can recall actual products sold. I will continue.to'look into the matter.
II. Calcium Silicate in Thermobestos
Thermobestos was first produced in 1939 and has always contained hydrus-calcium silicate. Until 1973 it was composed of hydruscalcium silicate with asbestos fiber. In 1973 the asbestos fi ber was substituted with "glass fiber." The new product was then called Thermo 12. This information was obtained from R. E. Clark and F. Matthews of the Industrial Products Division.
