INTERIM REPORT MR-5526 The first phase of a study to determine workplace performance of half-mas* air purifying respirators against asbestos is near compl: lor.. The purpose of this letter is to summarize preliminary findings of this study. A complete report will follow during 1984. This study involved collecting air samples from in ::'- and outside of respirators (single use and elastomer.s. while asbestos removal work was being done. The v/orkplace protection factor was then calculated as the ratio of the cutside ..concentration to the inside concentration. All volunteers received standard training and fit tests (3M saccharin procedure) at the beginning of' the study. Only respirators which passed the fit test were used in the workplace studv. Its to date are summarized in the attached table. Ir.ta- results from an ongoing laboratory study on filter eff-ti' :y Against asbestos at Los Alamos National Laboratory are also . .7 rved . A "tipsy and Occupational Health Division Bulletin will be issue- t: provide recommendations based on these results.
