Re: ERP candidate prioritization & recommendation to Oversight Committee
As you may have already read in the attached note, Baruch Brody & Myron Harrison (ExxonMobil) have recommended Dr. Paul Lombardo (Univ Virginia) to fill Baruch's vacancy on the Shanghai Health Study Ethics Review Panel (ERP). Paul has collaborated closely with Baruch on other studies, and after being approached by Myron to test his possible interest, Paul took the initiative to meet with Baruch on this topic (see Brian Doll's attached email for commentary).
Please reply to Patrick Beatty as soon as possible -- by close of business Friday 1/16 -- with your vote for one of the following courses of action:
A. Endorse Dr. Paul Lombardo as the TC's lead candidate to the Oversight Committee;
B. Personally evaluate the list of previously nominated candidates (2nd group in attached file) and recommend an alternate choice for lead candidate by email;
C. Request to discuss the issue by conference call next week, with Myron Harrison's invited participation by Stuart. Note that I will unexpectedly be away from the office [Matt has agreed to staff for API] and many TC members have schedule conflicts during the week of 1/12; the most likely time to achieve a quorum would be early Monday morning (8:00am EST; please confirm availability). ExxonMobil would like to nominate Professor Paul Lombardo for the Ethics Review Panel of the Shanghai Health Study. Paul is Associate Professor of the School of Medicine and Director of the Program in Law and Medicine at the Center for Biomedical Ethics at the University of Virginia. Myron Harrison has experience with Paul and approached him regarding his possible level of interest in joining the ERP. The following are excerpts from Paul's email response to Myron:
"Before I left, I had time to catch up with Baruch Brody. I gave him your regards.
"Despite his medical condition, he was in good spirits, and seemed not to have slowed down too much. He has been able to schedule his dialysis at times convenient for his work day so he makes the most of a difficult situation.
"He spoke in some detail about his contribution to the Shanghai project, saying he had wanted to continue, but was of necessity setting aside any travel time he may be able to take for visiting family. He was very complimentary of your work and the willingness of the project managers to implement procedures recommended by the ethics panel.
"In general Baruch said nothing that would dissuade me from participating--to the contrary, he encouraged my involvement."
Paul then expressed interested in working on the Ethics Review Panel and went on to say the following:
"As we discussed, this kind of research has significant public policy implications and the potential to generate controversy and negative reactions. While we would all hope to avoid such events, prudence dictates that I require an indemnification clause in the consulting agreement as a condition of participation. I will be happy to provide language to your contracting office that can serve that purpose.

"With adequate advance notice, I am usually fairly flexible in scheduling conference time and travel for consulting. This year it would be very helpful to know if the Asilomar conference will be in the last week of August as it was previously. "Should we need to discuss any details, I am generally available in my office in the mornings. I am sure there will be a thousand questions as I get involved, but for now I will just wait to receive a confirmation from you about what to expect next."
