I only wished to make sure of your understanding, for purely personal reasons, without making any inappropriate comments. Many friends and professional acquaintances have suppo sec that I would have chosen my own successor, where as I was but one voice, and merely an advisory one, in the choice. This is no complaint, for this is th e way - and the proper way - of institutional proce dure. As a rule, it works out well. Since receiving your letter, I am the more award that our views are similar. I am also aware of the disparity between such views and those held by the profession generally. This, as I see it, is the largest, and perhaps, for medicine generally, the most disastrous blind spot in our present professional outlook, for as surely as the world about us is changing, so certain is the fact that we in medicine will be supplanted, unless we waken to the facts of life and adapt our research and practice to the developing needs of society before it is too late. However, as I have concluded, there is more than) one way "to skin a cat", and I hope for the best.
