No. 326 November 5, 1953 STEWART BECOMES VICE-PRESIDENT, GENERAL MANAGER OF NATIONAL LEAD CO. OF OHIO Alex Stewart has been named vice-president and general manager of National Lead Company of Ohio, contract-operator of the Atomic Energy Commission plant in Fernald, Ohio. He continues as director of research for National Lead Comp-any. The Fernald plant includes a uranium ore refinery and other facilities for the production of uranium in forms suitable for use at the A.E.C.' s fissionable materials plant. National. Lead. Compan;- was selected as operator in May 1951. Construction of the plant is now nearly complete and 1,600 employees are presently at work there. Mr. Stewart's service with the Company began in 1908 at the Brooklyn research laboratories. He remained there until 1915, meanwhile completing his studies at Pratt Institute and Brooklyn Polytechnic Institu.- He left the Company to join the C. L. Constant Co., mining engineers, where he shortly assumed charge of the engineering, laboratory and research department, later becoming a partner. Mr. Stewart returned to the Company laboratories in 1930, serving until 1938 as research development engineer. At that time he became director of laboratory research in Brooklyn and in 1947 Mr. Stewart became director of research for National Lead Company. DOEHLER-JARVIS PRESENTS DIE-CASTING MACHINE TO CORNELL The Doehler-Jarvis Division has presented an exact duplicate of a production die-casting machine to the College of Engineering at Cornell University. Pre sentation was made by Joseph A. Martino, Company president, and Frank J. Koegler, Company vice-president and general manager of the Doehler-Jarvis Division. Cornell is the fifth institution to receive such a machine under National Lead Company's Doehler-Jarvis Division University Program, the others being Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute, Case Institute of Technology and Illinois Institute of Technology. The machines are utilized in college engineering and metallurgical departments to illustrate technical know-how for the classroom. In addition to the machines, periodic visits from the division's engineers and scientists have been arranged. Doehler-Jarvis also furnishes materials for the operation of the machines. MUCCILLI, HARPER NAMED TO POSITIONS 0N MANUFACTURING COMMITTEE Philip C. Muccilli, Company production manager, has been appointed chairman of the manufacturing committee. John F. Harper has been named a member of "the committee. Mr. Muccilli started with National Lead in 1920 as a draughstman in the Atlantic Branch. He later became plant engineer at Perth Amboy. From 1942 to 1945 he served as engineer at the Company-operated, government-sponsored magnesium plant in Luckey, Ohio. When that plant was closed at the end of World War II, he returned to the New York engineering department. In 1949 Mr. Muccilli was appointed assistant production manager of National Lead Company, and this year was named production manager. J Mr. Harper joined National Lead's production department in 1944, was with the engineering department for two years, and returned to the production department in 1947. This was the sixth time in seven years that the Company has received this award. MERSON ELECTED TO POST IN PAINT ASSOCIATION David A. Merson, Company vice-president and director, has been elected to the executive committee of the National Paint, Varnish and Lacquer Association. H. B. RENSHAW COMPTROLLER, PACIFIC COAST BRANCH H. B. Renshaw has been appointed comptroller of the Pacific Coast Branch. Mr. Renshaw started with the Bass-Hueter Paint Company in 1928 as an accountant and became credit manager in 1929. The following year he was appointed credit manager of National Lead Company of California. In 1935 Mr. Renshaw was named division accountant in Seattle and in 1947 he became assistant comptroller of the Company's Pacific Coast Branch. RIETH APPOINTED SALES MANAGER, NICKEL SALES DIVISION Charles C. Rieth has been appointed sales manager of the Company's Nickel Sales Division, A. M. NEUMANN SUCCEEDS W. F. SCHADEL AS CHIEF ENGINEER, EVANS LEAD DIVISION A. M. Neumann has been appointed chief engineer of the Evans Lead Division, succeeding William F. Schadel, who retired on October 1 after nearly 25 years of Company service. Mr. Neumann was graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1943. After service in World War II, he resigned from the Navy and joined the Company in 1948. He was employed by the Evans Lead Division as maintenance engineer, in which capacity he served until the present time. Mr. Schadel was graduated from Ohio State University in 1911 in mechanical engineering. With many years' experience in designing coal preparation equipment, he joined Evans Lead in 1929 as chief engineer. He served continuously in that capacity until his retirement. BAROID PUBLICATIONS WIN AWARDS Baroid Sales Division has won the "best of industry" award presented by the Direct Mail Advertising Association. The award to Baroid was given for "the best campaign directed to a specialized market". Material entered included company magazines, catalogs, technical handbooks and advertising reprints. Additional honors were won by Baroid for its publication, the "Baroid News Bulletin". At the national convention of the Society of Associated Industrial Editors this publication received the first place "Award of Excellence" for being the best external company magazine published. A second place "Award of Merit" was given Baroid for a feature story on road maps. J. W. GARDINER, JR., MADE LIFE MEMBER OF PHILADELPHIA ASSOCIATION J. W. Gardiner, Jr., manager, pigment division of the Philadelphia Branch, has been made a life member of the Executive Committee of the Philadelphia Paint, Varnish and Lacquer Association.
