Hurd, Portland Checked all accident reports and first aid cases and completed all records connected with these for i974. Reviewed personnel activity to complete 1974 records and also reviewed the records of the hourly people who have been terminated, currently, due to the plant closing. There are now 25 hourly employees on the payroll and all 23 salary employees. This will change as of 1/10/75. The 25 hourly people are working as follows: Mine Warehouse Maintenance Yard Joint System Janitor (parttime) 2 7 6 2 7 As work Is completed in the above areas, these employees will be terminated unless they exercise their seniority and bump Into Joint System. The Joint System has only one "old" employee at this time. O.S.H.A. requires a physical examination fchest xray and pulmonary function test) for new employees In Joint System and'an annual re-check. This was dtscussed with Jack Rauch and Irv Welbel and It was decided that we would wait until all potential "bumping" has expired and then arrangements will be made for these new employees to have the necessary physical exam completed. The same will apply to hearing tests for these employees. A SGP 0007864 baseline audiogram will be recorded for all these employees and following this we anticipate sending this approved hearing test booth to Wilmington, along with the audiometer. Jack Rauch and I met with Francis McCargar, who has taken early . retirement (age 59). He worked In Joint System and hts annual physicals have Indicated a possible mild emphysema but "not at all character Istlc of exposure to fibrous silicates." The latest report from the doctor Indicates "check again at time of next annual physical." Francis McCargar was advised that there was nothing alarming In his report, but his was different in one way from the others, in that a reference was made to his next physical exam. Therefore, In view of his retirement, the company recommended that he take this "next" physical now, at.: the company's expense and consult with the doctor at that time. Francjs McCargar advised that he was go irtg- to AH zona next week for v-eorc/.aArafic Corporation ^ SUBJECT: Akron - January 7, 8 and 9 DATE: 1-13-75 PAGE: 2 about a month, and he may move there. It was concluded that when he returns he will contact Irv Welbel and arrangements will be made to follow through on this, at that time. Irv will advise me when he gets the above message, and the doctor will be advised to examine and counsel this Individual accordingly. Jim Hurd had previously advised that he would make contacts and handle any transfers within Georgia-Pacific for Akron employees and requested I take some steps to help locate employment for these people, other than in G-P. A visit was made to National Gypsum at Clarence Center and met with Elmer Epke, Personnel Manager and Dave Walsh, Plant Manager. Charles Gonyd, at their Buffalo Office was also contacted by phone. Currently, they have some employees on lay-off, but expressed Interest in experienced Gypsum personnel when they were hiring again. They will contact Ed Foley, for references, etc. A visit was also made to U, S. Gypsum at Oakfleld and met with John Blrstler, Personnel Manager and Terry Uren, Plant Manager. Their situation and comments were the same as stated for National. They also, will contact Ed Foley for references, etc. A visit was made to the New York State Employment Placement Service In Batavia and met with the manager, Loren Fleming. The attached letter to the Union amplifies facts of these visits. This letter was given to the hourly employees with their paycheck. A meeting was held with the salary people available, to discuss the Information In this letter. John Darmstedter will function as Safety Supervisor for Joint System along with his Quality duties. Reviewed with Irv Welbel, John and Bob Schifferle certain reports and other procedures Involved In our safety program. Bob Schifferle will go Into more detail, before he leaves, on some of these reports to help John become acquainted with these duties. This will Include O.S.H.A. records. Discussed with Ed Foley certain reports, personnel areas and E.E.O. records that will need to be handled In the new set up at Akron. Visited Thorold and Ajax after leaving Akron. NWP:eh Enclosure H. Sampling: The products included in this investigation are competitive products that a*e said to be equal or superior to the G-P products in their respective market areas. Testing: Each product was subjected to the battery of tests that we use in all new formulation work. Conclusions: The overall performance of the two G-P products tested can be judged as competitive with competition. All of the products tested gave SGP 0007866 TECHNICAL REPORT NO. 167 Investigation No. 1 Progress Report No. 1 Page 2 some indication of not being competitive in certain categories. The following tables indicate what these weaknesses are in direct comparison to the other products. It should be noted that in the tablp^, sanding is noted as a number. The higher the number, the easier the product is to sand. I. Plant Housekeeping Report The form is simple and self-explanatory. The inspection areas may need some modification from one location to another. The second column is for indicating if a given area was inspected or not, and we have also provided some room for comments. II. Rating Evaluation Sheet The rating evaluation sheet is provided to assist inspectors in achiev ing uniform ratings for conditions observed during inspections. The evaluation sheet does not include all of the conditions to be inspected, but it is designed to give you a feel for classifying specific condi tions into a rating category. III. Inspection Frequency The frequency of inspection, is left to the discussion of the local manager dependent on need. IV. Recordkeeping The completed Plant Housekeeping Report forms should be filed and kept for a minimum of three years. SGP 0007878 RATING EVALUATION Poor - Conditions which would constitute a poor ratine would include: Excessive accumulations of dust on floors, machines, building supports, stored materials, etc. Clothing, refuse, bottles, rags, etc., not properly stored or disposed of. Any unsani tary or unclean conditions existing in toilets, washrooms, showers or drinking fountains. Stored material upset, damaged stored materials not repaired, unnecessary accumula tions of scrap, paper, bags, etc. Water, oil or grease spills or leaks, severe disorderly arrangement of materials, broken equipment such as pallets, bags, etc., and other dirty, unsightly or disorderly conditions not otherwise specified. Fair Conditions which would constitute a fair rating would include: Moderate accumulations of dust on floors, machines, building supports, stored materials, etc. Conditions existing in washrooms, showers, toilets or drinking fountains which would indicate that cleaning had been done; however, better cleaning is necessary. Stored materials improperly piled or arranged. Materials protruding into aisleways. Scrap, paper, bags, etc., left lying on floor, on loads or found on the ground, and other conditions which need improvement not otherwise specified. Good - Conditions which would constitute a good rating would include: Light accumulations of dust on floors, machines, building supports, stored materials, etc. Conditions of the washrooms, showers, toilets and drinking fountains indicate that adequate cleaning is achieved; however, there is still room for improve ment. Stored materials properly piled and arranged; however, straighter stacking and a more orderly arrangement of materials can be achieved. An occasional piece of scrap, paper or bag lying on the floor, on loads or found on the ground. These and other conditions not otherwise specified are satisfactory; however, improvement can still be achieved. Excellent Conditions which would constitute an excellent rating would include: Virtually no accumulations of dust on floors, machines, building supports, stored materials, etc. The washrooms, showers, toilets and drinking fountains indicate a superior job of cleaning. Stored materials properly piled and arranged in a complete orderly fashion. No scrap, paper or bags on floors, loads or ground. These and other conditions not otherwise specified are outstanding. S, Department of labor Bulletin dated 3/27/71* -- OSHA alerts Employers and Employees to New Asbestos Hazards". According to this release OSHA has learned of a new found source of hazardous exposure to asbestos fibers and that many speckling and taping compounds used to cover seams in dry-wall joints contain asbestos. In order to comply with instructions of this directive it was requested in our letters of last year that we obtain from your organization an analysis of the products and specifically those that contain asbestos being sold to the Sherwin Williams Co, for resale. Upon a complete review of all the information that has been sent in, it was noted that your company was one of the few that did not honor this request. It becomes vitally important at this time,-that you forward to our attention immediatelr complete analysis and a copy of your current labels for the above materials that are sold to our Corporation, I cannot stress enough the urgency and oooperation of this request, otherwise, steps to remove your line from the approved source of supply could be taken.
