The Krummrich Plant's safety philI__________I osophy reaches out to every employee on every job... then reaches out into the community. The Krummrich Plant was one of the founding co-sponsors of the St. Clair County Community Awareness and Emer gency Response (CAER) Program, which seeks to improve the protection of public health and safety in the community. CAER is a detailed emergency response plan which involves local public safety officials and industry to provide pro cedures for handling emergencies and for communicating safety information to area residents. Krummrich also sponsors safety and emergency training for area fire departments and has a reciprocal agreement with Scott Air Force Base for the use of foam to fight certain chemical fires. We also have our own fire department, an emergency response team, and an Emergency Medical Technician squad in the plant. Several of our employees serve as volunteer fire fighters in their local communities. Within the plant, we constantly work to ensure that our safety equipment is the most modern available and that Krummrich employees are well trained on equipment usage and chemical handling. They constantly receive retraining and updates on safety procedures. In addition, we monitor the entire safety process on a regular basis, from the receipt of raw materials to the manufacture of our final products. We continuously seek safety improvements to our pro cedures, equipment and training programs. In fact, a large percentage of our employees actively serve on area safety committees. Numerous programs within the plant ensure that safety is our number one priority. Our TAKE TWO program requires the personal involvement and commitment of every employee. The central theme of TAKE TWO is personal responsibility for having the right tools and job knowledge and for taking the right safety actions to prevent injury. Each employee attends an annual all-day safety training seminar. We have also had an active industrial hygiene program since 1975. Elements of that program include hearing conservation, hazard training, respirator training, and other projects important to ensuring the health and safety of our employees. In fact, sound environmental management is a cornerstone of Monsanto corporate policy. At Krummrich, our emphasis is on environmental control. We constantly monitor plant operations and conduct periodic internal plantwide audits to ensure regulatory compliance. New projects are reviewed and are required to utilize the best technology for emission reductions. We continuously invest in process improvements to reduce emission potential. In 1984, the Krummrich Plant led the chemical industry by installing a community warning system. Over the years, we have also continued to upgrade waste water treatment systems for the plant and surrounding communities. Monsanto has been instrumental in upgrading and building wastewater facilities including the American Bottoms Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility -- which was financed by a $42 million bond issue backed by industrial commitments. American Bottoms stands as a major landmark to community-industry cooperation to meet community needs. At Krummrich, safety far exceeds any regulations set by the government. For example, our Hazardous Waste Management plan exceeds regulatory requirements and meets the demanding Monsanto worldwide environmental guidelines. A major objective of this plan is to convert from landfill methods to incineration or other processes which render all wastes non-hazardous or immobile. Our safety concern goes well beyond our own fenceline. Our ongoing training program qualifies our emergency response employees to help handle chemical transportation emergencies. At Krummrich, we are relentless in our pursuit of environ mental excellence. We step up to the challenge of meeting changing government regulations. Where possible, we voluntarily implement controls and procedures beyond what the law requires. They are found in the tires on your car, in the cleansers you use to scour your sink, and in the paints you use to spruce up your house in the spring. Our products are in plastics, agricultural chemicals, paper, and pesticides...to name a few. We make 15 different chemical products at the Krummrich Plant. They have names like Santojlex rubber processing chemicals, Paranitroaniline, and Muriatic Acid. And although the names may not be household words, they are important to all Americans. In fact, many of the top quality chemicals in the world are made right here at the Krummrich Plant. Specialty Chemicals are used to make products ranging from Anacin-3 to Lasso herbicide to scouring powders to swimming pool disinfectants. Our plant began opera tion in 1907 when it was known as the Commercial Acid Company. Monsanto bought Commercial Acid in 1917 and called the new location Plant B. During the 1930's, Plant B saw considerable expansion. The Sauget Village wastewater treatment system began con struction of sewers and a pump station during that period. This was the beginning of a long tradition of cooperation between the community and area industry. The 1950's brought more new products and facilities. The employees petitioned the Monsanto Executive Committee in 1951 to change the name of Plant B to the William G. Krummrich Plant. The new name was chosen to honor their former plant manager who had become a Monsanto vice president before his death that same year. As it has for nearly seven decades, the Krummrich Plant operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, making the products which, in large part, improve our everyday lives. Krummrich is on the leading edge of technology and oper ates the most advanced Computer Integrated Manufactur ing system in the industry.
