FILE NAME: Drywall Spackling Compounds (DWSC) DATE: 1977 Aug 26 DOC#: DWSC065 DOCUMENT DESCRIPTION: Letter from Bondex International, Inc. to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission August 26, 1977 Dr. Lawrence Kushner, Commissioner Consumer Product Safety Commission 1111 18th Street NW Washington, D.C. 20207 Dear D r . Kushner: You requested a follow up on several questions asked during my appearance before the Commission at the Public Hearing regarding the proposed ban on respirable free-form asbestos containing wall patching compounds. A review of our figures would indicate that the raw material cost only on asbestos free Pre-Mixed Joint Compound is 15% higher than that same product made with asbestos. As to testing of substitute materials, we attach copy of a report which is self-explanatory covering both Attapulgus Clay (Attapulgite) and Calcium Carbonate. We trust this provides the additional information you desired for your final determination on the subject. A copy of this letter and four additional copies of the test report have been forwarded to the office of the assistant secretary. Sincerely yours BONDEX INTERNATIONAL, INC, JKN/zh cc: Hr. Sheldon D. Butts Assistant Secretary Julius K. Nemeth
