From the clin ical point of view , it was observed that the incidence of pneumo co n io sis (v ery low in talc w ork ers) d ecrea sed in proportion to the in crea se in d istan ce from the m in e. O ptical, m icro sco p ic and X -ray diffraction an a ly sis showed that d iffer ent types of industrial talc are contaminated with such m inerals as trem olite, serpentine and quartz which are w ell known fo r their fibrogenic action. The predominant sym ptoms w ere dyspnoea (29) and cough ( 1 2 ) . B asilai crepitations and clubbing w ere noted in 12 and 8, respectively. The mean predicted values for the various pulmonary function param eters m easured were within the 95% con fidence lim its of the control group. However, an appreciable number of talc workers had values which fell outside these lim its. This was paiticularly evident in the vital capacity, total lung capacity, and Dl q q . There w ere 16 who showed pulmonary' infiltration on their chest roentgenogram s as compared to 27 without such evidence.
