NEW C-8 TEST
The lab has been looking forward to the new C-8 test for several
months since it represents a major portion of our cost savings program
($11,800 Annually). This letter summarizes the current status of the test.
Bob Lanyon and FEP Technical have run multiple cross-checks between
if the liquid impinger method and the new, dry absorbent tube method. The tubes
collect C-8 dust which results in a higher C-8 result in dusty areas (e.g. FEP
clean room and conveyor areas). FEP management and Joe Loschiavo (Industrial
Hygienist for Teflon) are concerned that the C-8 in the dust is not absorbed
into the blood and want a medical study by Haskell to be run to determine
it
is.

C-8 dust
If the
dust is large (30-50 or greater), then it is unlikely that the C-8
is absorbed into the lungs and the Ub would continue to run by the
liquid impinger method. If the dust is small ( 10 ), then a Haskell
medical study will be run.
2) Haskell Medical Study -- This would be a short term (total of 2-3 .months) study on rats which would measure a rise in C-8 content in the blood when exposed to a C-8 dust environment.
It now appears unlikely that the lab will switch to the new method
before December or later. Communicate this information to your laboratorians
when appropriate.
