PURPOSE
As a companion project to ADP-7726 la which various paints were analyzed for lead content, the determination of the amount of lead leached from some of these and other paints was requested. The leaching agents chosen were 4% acetic and 0.5Z hydrochloric add.
The following paints were subjected to the extraction tests:
K7 W 97, Super Kern Tons, Dover White, C2231 K3 W 97, Kern Clo, Dover White, C22B1 A3 W 16, Kem-l-Coat, Bright White, C1981 F6S T 2, Rem Lustral Enamel, Lemon Yellow JX 5630, Aerylyd Yellow for Caterpillar
The amount of lead present In the above paints is as follows:
K7 W 97 K3 W 97 A3 W 16 F65 Y 2 JX 5630

An approximate percentage of the leed extracted baaed on Che total lead present la given in the following table for the panela prepared in our laboratory.

The corresponding figures for F65 Y 2 and JX 3630, while not eatinated, would of course be very low.
The Super Kaa Tone, Ken Glo and Kan-l-Coat materials were brushed on aluminum panela and allowed to air dry a minimi of seven days prior to testing. The Ken Luatral panels, which were supplied by Lee Williams, were coated in April, 1971. A catalyst, V6 V 241 containing Desmodur N, waa used in curing the JX5630 panala supplied by Willla Whited.
DISCUSSION
Four percent acetic add waa chosen as one of the- extractants bacauaa it la employad in the FDA procedure for the 'Determination of Lead in Pottery'. In this procedure the vaesel is filled with 42 acetic acid, allowed to etand at room temperature for 24 houra, and the lead in the leeching solution dseermined by atomic absorption. A ssnpla la considered violative If it contains 7.0 or more |ig laad par ml. of leaching solution.
The 0.3Z HC1 extractant was suggastad by t. W. Scott as balng tha approximate concentration of etaaach add.
