Murray, Code 590.4, and L. Liukonen, NRMC Code 430.2, of 1 Mar 77 1. The Industrial Hygiene Branch reviewed the asbestos containing material handling and storage procedures in Shop Stores 26, 56 and 41 on 1 March 1977. 2. Findings and recommendations: a. Shop Stores 26 Finding. Asbestos containing heat shielding millboard"(NSN 5640-00-2/0-1621) is dispensed to rod shacks where it is further dispensed to Individuals for use as a heat shielding board during welding. The board is received in and dispensed from Shop Stores 26 in sealed boxes of 6 sheets each. Recommendation. The board should not be dispensed from shop Stores 26 in other than full sealed cartons. The boxes must be stenciled with "Contains asbestos fibers, avoid creating dust, repackage into poly bags before issue." b. Shop Stores 41 Finding. As discussed in reference (a) all asbestos containing material should be stored in a separate room. A sign should be posted on the entrance to the room stating as follows: "Caution Asbestos Material Stoflege Area - Do Not Remain in Area Unless Your Work Requires It - Dust Respirator-Required." mm. The area must be cleaned regularly using a vacuum cleaner equipped with a special high efficiency filter. c. Shop Stores 56 Finding. Pipe hangars which have been lined with asbestos are stored in open bins. Recommendstion. The( bins containing lined pipe hangars should be enclosed and labeled as containing asbestos. Hangars should be added to the bins in a method which will not produce dust. Personnel must wear dust respirators while placing hangars in the bins. Hangars must be issued in sealed plastic bags which are labeled as containing asbestos. The area should be cleaned frequently using a vacuum equipped with a special high efficiency filter. 3. All personnel working in shop stores who may handle asbestos materials must be advised of the hazards of asbestos and the necessary precautions. The'following asbestos containing materials are issued from Shop Store 38: Asbestos Teflon packing (various diameters) Packing, asbestos rod (various diameters) ^^tlockfgaskecjaatStal (various widths)- *", t _ *, ' Thepacking materials are issued by the foot and are cut with a shears or hacksaw. They are coated materials and do not release appreciable amounts of asbestos during normal use. The gasket material is issued by the sheet and is not cut in Shop Stores. 3. No hazard exists in Shop Store 38 during normal handling of the asbestos containing materials however, personnel who use the materials may be exposed Intermittently to asbestos. A finding of reference (a) was that Shop 31 personnel using asbestos containing gasket material utilized no controls to prevent inhalation of asbestos fibers. Reference (b) addressed this problem and attempted to resolve it by posting required precautions in various areas in the shop. This however, would have required extensive use of signs as the gasket material is used throughout the shop. The easiest means, therefore, of cdvising the users of the potential hazard is by labeling all asbestos bearing material before it leaves the shop store.
