HASKELL IABOR&TORY NEWARK, DELAWARE TOXICITY OF COATED MICA FLAKES RE: Telephone conversation B.H.Perkins - J.W.Clayton, Jr. 12/18/61 Confirming our telephone conversation of 12/18/61, we are sending to Miss Hood two pigment samples for dust inhalation toxicity tests: (1) TiOg - YCR contains 1$ SbgC^ and 1$ AI2O3 (2) Ti02 - LOCR contains no 88203. 1$ AI2O3 The tests on these TiOg pigments are prompted by the toxicity indica tions observed by Haskell Laboratory for TiOg coated mica flakes which contain antimony or chromium (samples NF-103-D, lot 12916, 0.4$ Sbg03 and NF-105-D, lot 12939, 1.3$ 0^03). Samples YCR and LOCR have been sold for years without reported toxicity. Results with them may provide a reference point for evaluating the toxicity hazard to humans of the antimony-containing TiOg/Mica Pigments. It was also agreed that you will proceed with a literature search I ,44^ for relevant toxicity data. / Prompt evaluation of the samples will be greatly appreciated. The data are urgently needed for decision on continuation of manufacture and sale of treated coated mica flakes.
