Felix, J.M. Odom, R.J. Zipfel, F.A. Vogelsberg) DuPont and Envirogen, Inc. recently (8/9/95) initiated a joint cooperative effort directed at investigating biodegradation of trifluoroacetate (TFA) and ammonium periluoro-octanoate (C-8). The objective of this development effort relates to Envirogen demonstrating biodegradation of TFA and C-8 using naturally ocuring bacterial strains of methane monooxygenase (MMO) system. DuPont's interest is for EID937976 r^i o 000038 Envirogen to use its successful experience in the biodegradation of halogenated (HCFCs S HFCs) and brominated compounds with methanotrophie (methane-oxidizing) bacterial strains which MHO system is present, and apply such expertise to TFA and C-8. The experimental investigation is currently being conducted at Envirogen's facility in Lawrenceville, NJ. Prior to the start of the program, DuPont & Envirogen reviewed and agreed on the test protocol and the analytical methods. HCFCs and HFCs that get emitted to the atmosphere are attacked by tropospheric hydroxyl radicals, leading to the the formation of TFA {CF3C02H}. A source for C-8 {CF3(CF2)6C02NH4> emission could be from the "Teflon" fine powder process, where it is used as a surfactant in the post-reaction step of the process. KJZO14291 EID937977 G000.39
