The follovlag report covers the highlights of Association activities for the third quarter of i960. More detailed Information on these activ ities or others not enumerated vill be supplied on request. Ho attempt has been made to cover routine activities, and research is covered In a separate report of the Research Director.
GENERAL
1. Information Bulletins. Three more In this series of bulletins vere distributed to members.
2. Statistics. A conference was held vith the Bureau of Mines la Washington to explore vays In vhich LIA might assist the Bureau In dis seminating its statistical Information an lead more promptly and thus In crease its value.

3. Manfred Bovditch, Director of Health and Safety. Hr. Bowditch died suddenly of a heart attack on June 29, I960. Permanent plans for the continuation of his work have not yet been completed. Meanvhlle, the Secretary Is unking every effort to see that matters of limed!ate Importance In this field receive proper attention.
k. Lead Poisoning freo Pottery. A case of lead poisoning from lead glazed pottery vas brought to LIA1s attention. Since no such cases hare been reported In many years, and since properly made and applied glazes need present no hazard, this esse vas Investigated. It vas found to be authentic but the result of Improper production methods. Hie manu facturer bad voluntarily closed bis plant and vlthdravn his product from the market. Arrangements vere made to give him technical assistance In producing a harmless product. So far the natter seemed to have been handled In an Intelligent manner by all concerned, and It Is hoped that It will receive little, If any, unfavorable publicity.
5. Toxicity Research. A meeting of a special committee, formed at the direction of the Board of Directors, vas held In Rev York on July 27. This comlttae vas composed of representatives of members and s number of professional authorities cn toxicology. The purpose vas to advise the
o Board ca the need for and general nature of research to develop more specific Information on the toxicity of various lead compounds. The need for such research vas confirmed, and It vas recommended that a smaller group be charged vith the responsibility of vorklng cut end supervising a detailed progras.

6. Health and Safety Bulletin. Another In thla aerlea of bulletin* vu aent to members in July, transmitting an excellent recent paper cc "Modern Methods for the Prevention, Detection and Treatment of Lead Intoxication."
7. Lead Poisoning In Cattle. Sceie aaalatance was rendered the Southern Pacific ftailroad In preparing the defense of a suit brought
against It for the poisoning of cattle resulting from sandblasting a
bridge painted with red lead.
6. Milwaukee "Lead Poisoning" Case. Another conference was held with attorneys In Chicago on the defense of thla case, In which we are lending assistance and which has been mentioned In previous reports. Oir attorney was present when depositions were token from the plaintiff. It now appears that the c_ie will not come to trial before November.

9. Storage Batteries. A paper on the outlook for lead storage batteries, presented by the late Clifton 0. Crimes, vice presidentresearch, Electric Storcge Battery Company, at the Battery Association 4 meeting In June, was reproduced by us and distributed to members of LIA. Also, copies of a nev brochure on the battery-powered delivery truck now
O In production at Cleveland Vehicle Company was distributed.
10. "Lead," The third i960 Issue of "Lead" was written and readied for distribution In early October.
11. Advertising. In our "newsletter" series of ads, two one-page Insertions appeared in "Materials In Design Engineering" and one in "Product Engineering" during the quarter. Another ad In the series was
prepared for appearance In October and Sovember.
12. Sweet's Design Engineering Catalog. A nev 12-pege catalog on lead was prepared for the I96I Sweet's Design Engineering file, which goes to some 16,000 design engineers. Reprints will be mailed to members later. It covers the forms of lead available, principal properties and uses, and has specific sections dealing with radiation shielding, corrosion resistance, corrosion protection, sound attenuation, vibration attenuation, power sources, ceramics and others.
13. Annual Review. The major port cf the preparation of the annual review article on technical developments In lead, its alloy* and compounds, for "Industrial and Engineering Chemistry" was accomplished.
PTDUSTRT DEVELOPMENT--METAL PRODUCTS
1U. ICBM Launching Bases. These underground bases have been re ceiving vide publicity without reference to the 10,000 tons of lead used In their construction. Two visits to the Office of the Chief of Army Higlneers have elicited promises of full cooperation In publicising the use of lead. Some publicity should be forthcoming soon.

a 1$. Plumbers' Apprenticeship Contest. For the seventh consecutive year, David M. Borcina of LIA Ecrved as Judge of lead vork at the Inter* national Plumbers1 Apprenticeship Contest held at Purdue University, and
Homer S. Yctnan conducted a refresher course In lead vork for Instructors of apprentices. LIA avarded prices to the three best lead vorkers among the apprentices.
16. Cable Sheathing. The American Institute of Electrical Engineers accepted for presentation and publication the report of the successfully concluded LIA research project on continuous extrusion of lead alloy cable sheath. Preprints of the paper vere obtained end circulated to members and Interested people in the power Industry.
17. Advertising, Two new advertisements on lead alloy anodes fcr cathodic protection In Impressed current systems vere prepared, one dealing with protection of ships and the other with waterfront structures Ilka piers and bridges. One appeared In the September Issue of "Marine Engineering/Log" end the other In "Engineering Bevs-Record," September 15. They are both scheduled for reappearance In November. An ad on the American Airlines Terminal's huge leaded glass window also appeared In the June 30 and August 18 Issues of "Engineering Neva-Record."
18. Welding. A new expanded section on lead welding (burning) was written for the new edition of the American Welding Society's "Welding Handbook." It has been circulated to our newly organized Welding Coo* mlttee for consents and approval.

19. Advertising. An ad on lead glazed brick appeared In "Americas Ceramic Society Bulletin" In July, "Driti. and Clay Record" In August, and "Ceramic Industry" In September. A new ad on leaded porcelain enabled aluminum was prepared for appearance this fall and vlnter lr. the ceramic magazines and in "Metal Product Manufacturing."
20. Ceramics Technical Committee. A meeting of this ccomittee was held In September to review the I960 research and promotional activities and develop recosmendatloos for 1961.
21. Supplement. A new staff.prepared supplement to our manual "Lead In the Ceramic Industries" on porcelain enameled alimlnum v&a pre pare 1 and cleared with the Ceramics Technical Committee. It will be published this fall.
22. Meetings. Annual meetings of the Electronics and Whits Wares Divisions of the American Ceramic Society vere attended.

23. Advertising, Three nev ada 00 the use of paints containing lead plgmenta for all coats on steel were prepared. Two were for use In fall and winter issues of "Engineering News-Record" and the other for "Marine Englneerlng/Log." One nev ad on pearlescent lead finishes for metal was prepared for "Metal Product Manufacturing" and appeared In August, to be repeated once later.

24. Technical Letter. Work was started on a new Red Lead Technical Letter which voul. be an up-to-date summary of all earlier Letters, sines most of these are practically out of print.
INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENT--SCTJND AMD VXBRATICW
25. Articles. As a result of LIA staff cooperation with editors of "Steel" end "Chemical Week," an excellent article appeared In each publication on the general subject of 6ound and vibration attenuation. Both articles were reprinted for distribution to members and others.
26. Sound Attenuation Report. The rewritten Bolt Beranek and Newman report on lead for sound attenuation received that firm's approval for publication by us. It has been turned over to the printer and will be ready for distribution to architects, design engineers, building com ponent manufacturers and others within the next thirty days.
27. Folding Partitions. A visit to Dave Chapman, Inc., Chicago Industrial designers, revealed that the lead-wire-bearing flexible material for soundproof folding partitions will soon have full scale field tests at the University of Chicago and elsewhere. Mr. Chapman will welcome assistance In publicising the material, but only after these tests have proved satis* factory. The teat material Is being cade by Mohasco Industries on carpet locos and has already used 20 tens of lead wire.
28. Antlvlbratlon Pads for Printing Presses. A publicity article on this subject was prepared with the cooperation of the leading firm of architects and engineers engaged in the design of newspaper printing plants. It Is expected to be published soon in appropriate trade media.
29. Cooling Tovers. A similar article on lead-asbestos pads for air-conditioning cooling towers was prepared and by-line obtained frea the engineers who have used these pads for this purpose.
30. Lead-Asbestos Pads for Building Foundations. Technical data and assistance were supplied the architects and engineers for the speci fication of these pads in the foundations of Grand Central City (now Pan Am ftilldlng) In New York end a new large office building In Boston.
