This Important decision by Monsanto's management ha3 been carefully considered. - The Therminol FR series of fluids contain polychlorinated biphenyls (PG3s). Studies indicate PCBs may be aocjmulating in the environment. In some Instances, PCBs have been found In food or In the food chain. An article by Carl C. Gustafson of the U.S. Federal Water Quality Administration appearing In "Environmental Science & Technology" and dealing with this subject Is attached for your information. Because of Monsanto's concern over this problem. In the United States we have previously discontinued sales of PCBs where the usage was In so-called "open" systems and previously where the usage would be In food processing applications, We have neb---------decided to withdraw all sales of Therminol FR heat transfer fluids world-wide. *. As a result of these efforts, many of our heat transfer fluid customers have switched from Thermlnoi pr series fluids to other materials or systems. Our action in discontinuing sales for use in heat transfer systems has been taken because of the problems which may arise should there occur accidental leakage of PCBs from such systems. We believe this action Is In the best Interest of all our customers who have been using these materlals^ln heat transfer applications. When you change over from Therminol FR to a non-PCB heat transfer fluid, you should drain out the Therminol FR thoroughly and clean MONS 095915 2 the system ,before refilling. In view or hhe potential eooiogleai problems associated with PCBs you should make certain the spent fluid is disposed of in a safe manner.
