M. Gregory, Chairman of the Industrial Commission of Ohio, asked me if I would, when in Canton, Ohio territory, call at the Timken Roller Bearing Company ana investigate,the conditions under which the claimant O.D. 5050, worked. The following, is my report: The room in which the claimant worked was approximately 15 feet wide and 30 feet long and an IS foot ceiling. This room called the "laboratory" is a room built inside of the large steel mill, bricked in on three sides, the fourth side being the outside wall of the main building ana large windows all along that side which would give adequate outside ventilation. In the opposite wall was an ordinary size door approximately 3 feet wide and 7 feet high that could either be kept open or closed. This room, was heated by steam. In this room waslocated a power cut off saw, a lathe and a work bench. It was the duty of the claimant to take long bars of steel and cut them in pieces approximately 5 inches long, which he did on the power cut off saw, water was used as a cooling compound on this saw. The next operation was to center the pieces and then place them in the lathe between centers and turn each end to 7/8 of an inch in diameter and in toward the center of the piece for one inch, then he turned the center of tne piece down to .502 thousands of an inch, the pieces then to be usee for test bars. In. order tokeep the dead center of the lathe from running hot the claimant had a small can formerly used for hand soap with about 1/4 of an inch of white lead in it. The lid was on the can and had a hole punched through it; through this hole he had a small wooden 3tick about the diameter of a match stick, on the end of this stick he would get a very small amount of white lead and place it in the center of the test bar. The air in this room was very good, it is almost impossible for any fumes to come in from the main mill room ana if they did get in through the' small door, which could have been closed, they would not have been lead fumes as no white lead is useu in the mill. Fumes could not come from the turning operation because if the centers get hot enough to make fumes you ruin the lathe centers. >.
