McKee Subject: Plant Manager's Safety Inspection Department 19-20-25 This memo summarizes the observations made during the Plant Manager's Safety Inspection of Departments 19-20-25 on Friday, August 7, 1959. The Inspection began with a meeting of department supervisors and the Inspection team to review what steps had- been taken to Improve housekeeping and safety attitudes In the department since the last inspection. Some of the steps discussed were: weekly supervisory area inspections, current major painting program, equipment revisions to reduce spillage and atmospheric pollution, replacement of acid etched concrete areas with acid proof brick, assignments of special areas for housekeeping improvement to supervisors. Increased operator follow-up, etc. One feature of the discussion was the enthusiastic and spirited response by the supervisors to all questions. They exhibited real pride In reviewing their safety efforts. It is evident that supervisory morale Is at a good level. During the area inspection the following general points needing Improvement were noted: 1. Several gaskets, pieces of wire hangers, etc., were found, indicating the need to re-emphasize maintenance clean-up following repair work. 2. Utility station signs were in need of repainting. 3. Pressure and level gauges were paint smeared and needed cleaning. 4. Clean-up of the catalyst building remains the No. 1 housekeeping problem (construction completion estimated for September l). 5. Excess boards piled under the 20T29 catalyst tanks. SC 16739 LAM024008 J. S. Putnam 2 August ll, 1959 One major problem discussed was the acknowledged difficulty of the maintenance supervisors in having sufficient time to take part in area inspections and to follow up on required work found during the inspections. A solution to this problem must be resolved if we are to maintain an effective housekeeping program. This problem will be reviewed by the superintendents involved. Interviews with hourly personnel (operations, maintenance, instrument) reflected a unanimous feeling that safety aware ness in the department had shown considerable improvement over the past several months. In general. It was felt that all personnel showed a definite improvement in pride in their work. In general morale and In safety consciousness.
