Turn FCW on any kettle that was running or being charged at time of failure. 3. Reduce temperature set point on all kettles to minimum settings. 4. Add 1/2 gallon of styrene to each kettle as rapidly as possible. Jf power failure exceeds 30 minutes, add an additional .1/2 gallon of each kettle. The batch polymerisation can be completed after conditions return to normal. Vent each operating kettle to stack for one .minute in rotation. Close valves on auxiliary system. b. open valves in main line. 4. Corrective action for kettle polymerizations should be governed by: the batch temperature and batch pressure rise. a. If it is not possible to maintain batch temperature below 70c and/or batch pressure below 135 psi, add 1/2 gallon of styrene to the batch. b. When water supply is returned to normal and batch temperature and pressure are returned to normal operating levels, maintain the batch at reaction temperature and complete the polymerization. Valve off any section of line or piece of equipment leaking. 3. Shut down VCM pump leading into line that is leaking. 4. Notify foreman. 5* Direct water hose on leak in effort to freeze leak. 6. If leak is from kettle, put FCW on, and drop jacket set point to zero. 7. If leak is expected to persist more than 15 minutes drop jacket set point on all kettles to zero. .8 If vapor testor exceeds 0.5 on 1/1 scale, use "Fall safe" feature to asset jacket. (Cut off air supply behind control panel) 9. Instruct Shift Supt. and guards to stop all traffic in South Plot. 10. Prevent people from entering Building. 11. If reading on vaportester exceeds 0.2 on l/l scale Instruct shift supt. to stop traffic on Monsanto Avenue. 12. Stop smoking in 88 and remove lighter. 13* Shut down equipment (dryer, centrifuge, etc.). 14. Stop mainteaance work. 15* Evacuate. R ference A.
