MONTHLY HIGHLIGHT REPORT - OCTOBER 1971 RESEARCH ft DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS DIVISION I. INDUSTRIAL PRODOCTS (South Bound Brook) A. PELTS AND PAPERS A repeat order for acrylonitrile gasketing paper was received from McCord Corp. following the initial shipment. Laboratory work is proceeding on formulations for two Victor Gasket specifications. B. AUTOMOTIVE Molded Mastic A modified wheelhouse cover, molding mastic has been tested and approved by Ford. Production will proceed for initial shipments beginning early in November. Means are being sought to replace the polyethylene film release sheet between individual parts by use of a coating. Improvement of low temperature impact resistance is also under investigation. A patent application covering the product has been filed. Carpet Underlay A run of 100 Fisher Body floor pan sound deadener parts has been requested for shipment to Magee Carpet where they will be molded and bonded to the carpeting. These will be used for installation trials at the Linden, New Jersey, assembly plant. The polypropylene-based mastic sheet originally approved has now been rejected because of charring that only occurs with the jute facing in a test at 400F for two hours. Fisher Body has approved the modified asphalt mastic for the trial in place of the significantly higher cost polypropylene product. Rust Preventive Mastic Plant test runs of two laboratory-developed formulations for a mastic sheet that will bond and conform to the floor pan during the paint baking cycle has been scheduled to provide material for tests at Fisher Body and Ford. II. MINERAL PRODUCTS (Hagerstown) A. RAW MATERIALS AND NEW FORMULATIONS Plant run white granules made with the new stearic acid, aluminum chloride, silicone aftertreatment and appropriate controls have been processed into roofing shingles at Baltimore and South Bound Brook. These are being applied on two test roofs in Charleston, West Virginia, and one at Bound Brook, New Jersey. These should establish sooting potential of the experimentals in an industrial atmosphere. A savings of $200,000 per year is involved. M/CH08524
