However, I do think it is still appropriate for Monsanto to write Mr. Smith a letter regarding the current facts as '*tHey"rrelate to^KTs statement as reported that PCB is a component in the production of PVC containers -- with copies also going to Edward D. O'Brien, Chairman of the Michigan House Committee on Economic Development, other members of the committee, George Graff of the Michigan Chamber of Commerce, and James Dygert of WJR. A suggested mailing list is attached. I believe such a letter, if received before the October 26 committee hearing, woulcl greatly help the efforts to separate PCB issues from this hearing. In the absence of a clear, common and open statement to all of these parties, I believe confusion will still occur at the hearing. Such a letter, attached to the printed record of what Mr. Smith reportedly said, would also go a long way in underscoring the responsibility that goes with issuing public statements that are not in line with the facts.
