Dear Mr. Grimm:
In response to your letter dated June 27, 1984, a Division A Safety and Hygiene Industrial Hygienist was dispatched to investigate the potential asbestos exposure in the Machine Parts Maintenance Service (MFMS} section of Owens Corning Fiberglass Corporation, Case Avenue, Newark, Ohio.
As is Division of Safety and Hygiene policy the initial visit, to a company in response to an employee complaint, is unannounced. The contact at the job site was Ms. Patti Mater. Ms. Mater escorted the Hygienist through the' facility to the job site. The hygienist was provided with a copy of the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for the material in question, Transite II. A review of the MSDS provided, revealed that Transite n unlike the original Transite is a non asbestos, magnaboard material.
The Supervisor in MPMS, Mr. Demezzo, stated that the work done on the evening in question was contracted out from another Owens facility. The work performed on the material is not routinely performed. Mr. Demezzo also stated that the parts machined from Transite II would in the future be provided pre machined to specification from the manufacturer of Transite II. Mr. Demezzo assured, in the presence of the Union representative, that in the future Material Safety Data Sheets or other comparable information would be provided whenever concerns like these arise.
In conclusion, Transite II since it is non asbestos and irregularly used is unlikely to pose a health threat to yourself or your co-workers.
If in the future any further concerns arise in the area of occupational safety and health, please feel free to contact the Division of Safety and Hygiene at 1-800-282-3045.

Please follow-through with a subsequent letter to Mr. Grimm, the worker at the Owens-Illinois Plant, with a response over my signature of the findings, so that we can eliminate any concern in this matter.
Thank you.
