Carr At Burlington Cal Ink Division Metallic Removal Device DATE June 6, 1972 copy to p.w. Kanzler '.W. Poarch lie As you requested, I called Nelson Beaudet on 6/2/72 to obtain some information on their metallic removal device, As Nelson related, the Cal Ink Division has had problems with metallic particles in the range of 50 microns and higher in news ink (scratching rotogravure rollers). They have successfully c'ommercialized a prototype of a lab scale ferro magnetic particle separator. The equipment simply described, for which Cal Ink will submit a patent, involves changing the windings on the stator of the motor to transverse windings such that flux lines at right angles to a flow pattern result. Iron balls are utilized to provide adjustable inter stitial spacing depending on the material from which metallics are to be removed. In our case. Nelson feels that we would have to open up the spacings for resin flow. As an added note, the mechanism has a convenient degaussing provision such that the unit may be backflowed to remove metallics. Nelson will forward to us a lab prototype, together with prints, for our review and lab scale evaluation. He hopefully will send these out this week. HBC/jt H.B. Carr COIiORlTE 014523
