The leading edge of each fining must be chamfered and be fitted diametrically opposite that of the other shoe. 9. Fit the brake shoes and springs to the back plate with the leading edges of the shoes against the direction.of rotation. Remove the retaining wire from the tappets. NOTE: On each shoe, the fining stops short of the leading end of the shoe, and in the portion not covered by the lining there is an aperture for access to the bell crank adjuster. 10. Ensure that the shoes are correctly located on the expander and the adjuster. Fit the new outer brake shoe retracting springs. Check that the yellow pair of springs are fitted to the ends of the brake shoes ament to the expander and the orange parr adjacent to the adjuster. 11. Ensure die expander tappet for the secondary shoe is fully home in the housing (the circlip will be almost touching the housing) and adjust the bell crank lever adjuster to give the specified clearance between the shoe tip (leading edge) and the expander tappets. Check the clearance using feeler gauges. Hold die bell crank adjuster and tighten the locknut to the specified torque value. 12. Ensure that the brake shoe adjuster is fully released. Remove any dust and dirt from the assembly. 13. Refit the wheel and brake drum assembly as detailed in Operation 14 371, taking care not to damage the brake linings. 14. Adjust the brake shoes as detailed in Operation 12 132. Refit the spring brake release bolt and tighten to the specified torque. 15. Remove the axle stands arid lower the vehicle. Reconnect the battery earth (-) cable. 6. Lever the lower shoe away from the expander, turn the shoe away from the backplate and release the shoe; the shoes can now be removed together with the retracting springs. 7. Fit a clip or wire round the expander tappets to keep them retracted. 8. Detach the retracting springs from the bell crank pivot pins. Withdraw die spring dips and remove the pivot pins, bell cranks and struts. To Install 9. Refit the bell crank struts and pivot pins to the new shoes with the adjustable cranks at the leading edges.
