University of Cincinnati Cincinnati, Ohio Dear Sir: I have recently been in conference and consultation with Dr. F. B. Lanahan, Medical Director of the Electric Storage Battery Co. in Philadelphia regarding some common problems in lead exposure in battery workers in the Scranton Battery Corp., Archbald, Pa., for which I hold a similar position to his. My visit was both instructive and enlightening. We are at present trying to establish a better plan for detecting lead exposure in our workers. It was interesting to find how parallel our thoughts had advanced independently of each other. We are at present working on a screening test based upon the presence of copoporphyrin in- urine. We are also considering the purchase' of a spectrophoto meter against a polarograph. Dr. Lanahan suggested that I write to you for any advice that you might have to offer in our selection. We have not been able to achieve a definite testing for presence of lead in some few of our longest employed men. Dr. Lanahan suggested that I might ask whether the Kettering Laboratory would check some paired blood and urine samples on these few men at a nominal fee. If you can do this for me, would you kindly send the necessary bottles. While our facilities in no way approach the magnitude of the Electric Storage Battery Co., I would be happy to extend whatever opportunities are available for research in our employ of approximately one hundred personnel. We have maintained a good esprit de corps with our workers and I believe they would cooperate with us in any problem that might interest you.
