Kith respect to your mamorandua of October 3rd to Len Sadoaky an subject
matter. I
there is one other consideration which is of paramount
importance to this whale subject. As yoa ire well aware, the Government will
probably blow the whistle relative to the use of asbestos in the not too distant
futon and, before we enbaxk upon a substantial expansion prograa at Berlin and/
or consider potting a new facility in tbs Southwest, ve bad bettor be damn 3ura
that we have an answer to the asbestos threat. Work has been dons an this in
the past and, to date, than has been no successful answer.

The finding that the ssmplo of aresite had a quart2 content of 21 per coat ir. quite surprising. It is thus apparent that exposure to this com mercial fora of ar.osito say present a potential hazard cot only from asbestos fibers hut also from frse-silica particles. The ficished produst, Xaylo, appears to consist principally of a crystalline form of calciua r.ilicato c.hich yields a characteristic ::-rty diffraction pattern. Petrographic and chemical eaanination revealed, however, that other constituents oro present in the material. /. ser.pla of light grade Kaylo was shown by analysis to have a cuortz content of about S per cent; foV the heavy grade the Talue was about 5 per cent. Both grades also contained noderate cnounts of asbestos. In e sample of the light grade the asbostos was in the form of chrysotile which comprised approximately S to 20 per cent of tho sample. For a sarnie of the heavy grade the chrysotile content was ostinatad to be about 5 to 10 per cent but, in addition, abcut 3 to 5 per cent of araosite asbestos was seen. Carbonates mado up about 1 per cent of each grade of Koylo.
