wo > WATER POLLUTION PROBLEM IN WOODBURY 3M's Water and Sanitary Engineering department has been investigating along with Woodbury township board and Minnesota Department of Health, complaints of bad odors in well water in Woodbury township since April. Test well samplings are indicating that ground water contamination is resulting primarily from waste chemicals from the Chemolite plant discarded at the Woodbury dump site since 1960. Chemical dumping in unlined pits at that location was stopped in early 1963. ALL 3M dumping at the site was stopped this past April. One landowner adjacent to the former dumping site cannot use his well water, since April, because of the odor. 3M is now hauling water to that location. Present data indicates contamination not yet widespread but apparently moving in a way that could affect neighboring farm water supplies and ultimately the water supply for St. Paul Park, Newport and Thompson Grove. If findings continue to bear out preliminary data, extensive corrective action will be required. This could involve digging out buried chemicals and pumping out contaminated water at a very substantial cost to 3M Final report and recommendations expected from J. T. Ling by late January.
