The 364-page bibliography co v ers 2,336 artic le s and other lite ra tu re , and is intended as a useful reference for engineers, physicians, executives and o th e rs who m ay be co n cern ed w ith p ro b lem s resu ltin g from ex cessiv e noise.
The proper approach to an understanding of the problem of noise and its solution necessitated a sy stem atic survey of the knowledge of the subject. The preparation and printing of this issue of the Bibliography was mad* possible by funds contributed by v a rio u s o rg a n iz atio n s. T h e re fo re it w as p o ssib le to distribute a lim ited num ber of copies to m em ber com panies of Industrial Hygiene Foundation. If req u ests for additional copies indicate that a second printing is n e c e ssa ry , they can be fu rn ish ed to m e m b e rs at 1 5 .0 0 each.

concentration of contam inants to which w o rk ers m ay be exposed fo r an eight-hour
working day w ithout in ju ry to health.

These values a re based on the best available inform ation from industrial experienc
from experim ental studies, and, when possible, from a com bination of the two. Th
a re not fixed values but a re reviewed annually by the C om m ittee on Threshold Limi
for changes, revisions, or additions as further inform ation becomes available.

Conflicting d ata from in d u strial exnerience h as caused the C o m m ittee to postpone the suggestion of a T h reshold L im it for th is m a te ria l. It is apparent that m ore epidemiologic work is needed for the establishm ent of a definite value.

ery against the ship and its owners since the court found that the ship
was not unseaw orthy and the owners w ere not negligent. The court found
that carbon disulfide m ight be p resen t in g rain recently fumigated. How
ev er, it w as the custom a t the p o rt where the incident o c cu rred to give no
tice if the g rain had been recently treated and no notice w as given in this
case. The court found that the ow ners, in the exercise of reasonable
care, would not have discovered that there was likely to be a dangerous
con cen tratio n of carb o n disulfide in the g ra in . T h e re fo re , th e re w as no
negligence. The co u rt further found that the w arranty of seaw orthiness
does not extend to the condition o r ingredients of the cargo. The court
held th at th e re w as no valid reaso n to shift the burden fro m the com pen

This paper presents the collective opinions of a number of m ed ical e d u cato rs who attended a conference on in stru c tio n in occupadonai m edicine. Fifteen reasons are given why occupational medicine should he taught. Among them are the needs for: a g reater knowledge of occupational health problem s; correction of erroneous concepts held by students; p ro v isio n of b e tte r m edical s e rv ic e to industry; a m o re ....... skilled assum ption of m edicolegal responsibilities; furthering both a holistic and a preventive approach to medicine; and the creation of a research sen-ice for industry. Other questions discussed w ere: what subjects should be caught, who does the teaching, and w here the teach lag should be accom plished, and in what year o r years the instruction should be given. A number of valuable suggestions a re given under each of these headings.

ventilating casualties with increased airway resistance. The prone
Eve m ethod gives about one half as much ventilation as do the push
pull m anual m ethods. In addition it requires a rocker, either p ro
vided o r im provised. F o r re su sc ita tio n of m any p erso n s by a few
o p erato rs it may be n ecessary to fasten together sev eral stre tc h e rs
for sim ultaneous rocking by a single o p erato r. M aintenance of a
clear airw ay is of param ount im portance for adequate ventilation with
any of these m ethods.

The subject of artificial respiration, both in resuscitation and in therapy is review ed, with em phasis on principles rath e r than on p a r. ticular m ethods. Subjects that have received little study include alveo la r ventilation ra te s, ventilation distribution, diffusion capacity, and ventilation-perfusion relations. The lim its of safe p re s su re levels in the lungs a re not p recisely known. F o r se v e ra l reaso n s inflation of the lungs is difficult, and in all form s of external resp iratio n , an effective in sp irato ry phase appears to be of prim e im portance. V arious methods of m an u al and m echanical re s p ira tio n a re d isc u sse d with re g a rd to th e ir efficiency. The circulatory effects of artificia l resp iratio n encompass a spectrum from the circulation-prom oting action of natural respiration to the potentially s e v e re im p airm en t that m ay be due to n fluctuating p o s itiv e-p ressu re device, la the norm al patient the effects on respiration are tem porary, but in the im paired patient, deleterious consequences can be m inim ised by general supportive m easu res and reduction of the m ean m ask p ressu re. The success of any method of artificial re sp ira tion is favored by knowledge of the underlying physiologic m echanism s and th eir interactions with the methods' used.

The re su lts of a lim ited survey of 768 reg istered disabled p e r
sons employed by a (B ritish ) stee l company a re given. It is shown that
le s s than 10% of the disabled w e re se v e re ly handicapped and 45r< had
only m inor or triv ial disabilities. It was eoted that the accident rate
for the disabled was below the average for a ll w o rkers and their sick
ness absence was only slightly higher. It is concluded that dais group
of re g istered disabled persons a re useful m em b ers of th eir working
community, but it is pointed out that iu our experience the preblears
associated with the disabled a ris e m ore often in connection with those
not registered-as such.
