The 364-page bibliography co v ers 2,336 artic le s and other lite ra tu re , and is intended as a useful reference for engineers, physicians, executives and o th e rs who m ay be co n cern ed w ith p ro b lem s resu ltin g from ex cessiv e noise. The proper approach to an understanding of the problem of noise and its solution necessitated a sy stem atic survey of the knowledge of the subject. The preparation and printing of this issue of the Bibliography was mad* possible by funds contributed by v a rio u s o rg a n iz atio n s. T h e re fo re it w as p o ssib le to distribute a lim ited num ber of copies to m em ber com panies of Industrial Hygiene Foundation. The court found that carbon disulfide m ight be p resen t in g rain recently fumigated. How ev er, it w as the custom a t the p o rt where the incident o c cu rred to give no tice if the g rain had been recently treated and no notice w as given in this case. The court found that the ow ners, in the exercise of reasonable care, would not have discovered that there was likely to be a dangerous con cen tratio n of carb o n disulfide in the g ra in . T h e re fo re , th e re w as no negligence. The co u rt further found that the w arranty of seaw orthiness does not extend to the condition o r ingredients of the cargo. Subjects that have received little study include alveo la r ventilation ra te s, ventilation distribution, diffusion capacity, and ventilation-perfusion relations. The lim its of safe p re s su re levels in the lungs a re not p recisely known. F o r se v e ra l reaso n s inflation of the lungs is difficult, and in all form s of external resp iratio n , an effective in sp irato ry phase appears to be of prim e im portance. V arious methods of m an u al and m echanical re s p ira tio n a re d isc u sse d with re g a rd to th e ir efficiency. It was eoted that the accident rate for the disabled was below the average for a ll w o rkers and their sick ness absence was only slightly higher.
