C. Horner, Assistant to the Chairman of General Motors Corporation, advised he would grant us an interview about the middle of next week. We are to communicate with him in New lork to fix the exact date. The arrangement of this interview was described in previous reports. The U.S. Gypsum Company advised C.F. Goodwin of the Membership Committee that they were unwilling to affiliate with the Foundation because of their "par ticular problem" and the fact that they had spent "several thousand dollars" for healthful working conditions. A release was completed and approved during the week giving an advance story on the Foundation's meetings for trade and technical journals. The distribu tion and covering letter was also worked out. It was then decided to delay dis tribution pending the approval of certain matters with the Board of Trustees. Dr. Meller has called a meeting of the Executive Committee of the Board for Pitts burgh on September 26. The effect of the war on American business began to be noted during the week. Two members of the Board advised of the disturbed condition of business, resulting in revision of policies and less attention to domestic problems. Two men we had been depending upon for participation in the industrial and public relations forum at the November meeting wrote declining to take part. One of them referred to the "uncertainty about the next few months." An advance newspaper release was worked on for the American Public Health Association meeting which will be held here in October. This is to be distributed during the coming week. The article promised to Scientific American sometime ago was mailed to the editor during the week. The Hampton, N.H., ONION and the Mattoon, 111. JOURNAL-GAZETTE carried brief items describing the Foundation during the week. le are leaving today for a two-weeks vaoa n which will include a number of business appointments in New fork.
