ASBESTOS CONFERENCE
Conversation with R. T. deTreville March 4
1970
At 8:30 today 3/4/70 I met with Dr. deTreville in his
in Pittsburgh to outline for him the purposes and the
office
gram for the I told him I
Asbestos Conference which we seek to did not think that this Conference
general prohold in Du Pont
could serve as a
prototype instruction meeting of the type which Industrial Hygiene
Foundation hopes to begin providing for member companies This is
because of the austerity program and our obligation to do as much
of the work in conne^tionwith this Conference by ourselves as is
possible I specifically asked for his participation in the
tation of the health aspects of asbestos We discussed
presen
health
aspects
which would
include
the
history
of
lung
a review of disease of
asbestos including asbestosis carcinoma and mesothelioma -
Dr. deTreville is enthusiastic about participating and has told
that he will be available on any one of the following dates
me
, 2 6 7 or 9
April
am to write him letter reviewing what we dis-
cussed today and the tentative program outline
He reviewed for me some of the functions which IHF is
to fulfill
These
would
include
participation
the
seeking
combined
in Accreditation Program for Industry in Industrial Health This joint
effort will bring together the Occupational Health Institute the
Industrial Medical Association the American Industrial Hygiene
for Association the American Conference Governmental Industrial
Hygienists the Academy of Occupational Medicine and will
an
accreditation
which
was

by
the
supersede American
College of Surgeons He spoke of obtaining applications for accred-
itation from Companies in which they would describe their effort in
industrial health including procedures for review of hazardous
cesses or operations such as that in which I was
pro-
Belle He thinks that this kind of information ensghaogueldd byeestaevaridla-y
able in connection with the government's expected interest in
obtaining data on compliance with health and safety laws
Note He told methat later this month he will address a meet-
ing of the American Textile Manufacturing Association which will be attended by Du Pont's president Mr. McCoy
Dr. deTreville is trying to provide for the the Foundation as a source of research pathology members He has discovered at Charleston South
lent candidate pathologist for a replacement for
future needs of for industrial Carolina an excelPaul Gross who will

retire in three years The candidate Dr. Harley is expected to remain at South Carolina in the intervening years and carry
on a research program associated with the efforotf Dr. Gross
in Pittsburgh A stafoff pathologists under Dr. Harley and
the department head will be available for outside pathology
work
oo.
The published proceedings of the Foundation's Fibrous Dust
Seminar which I attended about a year and half ago will issue later this month Copies of the Proceedings should be available for those who attend the Asbestos Conference Part of the
proceedings consist of an address by an epidemiologist Dr. Enterline of Pittsburgh who had data on the fate of persons exposed to asbestos Some were exposed for brief periods such
as two years then removed from industry and later in their lives
developed lung cancer Others beginning work about the same time and continuing towork the asbestos industry developed asbestosis and from this many subsequently died These data should be described in the Proceedings This is an indication
it that high exposure levels for fairly brief periods may subse-
quently result in deleterious effects Again may be indicative of the production of lung cancer by asbestos even when
asbestosis does not develop
