Dear Mr. Cawley:
Rockbestos Firewall III cables employing asbestos/polyester binder tapes may be installed using normal handling practices, with no concern regarding the possibility of flying asbestos particles from the tape.
To minimize release of asbestos fibers, the following procedure is recommended for stripping the jacket from cable ends prior to termination:
In order to expose individual conductors for termination, cut the jacket longitudinally to the required distance from the end.
Opening and spreading the jacket, cut it circumferentially at the required distance from the end. This procedure may reversed, if desired, or the jacket may be removed in tube form.
Remove binder tapes remaining over the individual conductors by unwinding and cutting them loose from the cable.
Use care in all cutting to avoid damaging the conductor insulation.
If this procedure is followed, we believe that these cables will not cause problems of any kind due to release of asbestos fibers.
Very truly yours
